Buchholz Struggles Again in Sox Loss

Clay Buchholz had his second bad start in a row last night as the Twins got to him early. The Sox scored 3 runs including home run # 498 by Manny in the first but that was it for their scoring. Buchholz quickly gave 2 runs back in the first and 2 more in the 3rd. He was charged with all 7 runs from the Twins last night and gave up 8 hits with 5 walks in 4 1/3 innings. Lopez, Hansen and Timlin went the rest of the way only giving up 3 combined hits but the damage was done.

Sox lose 7-3 BOX SCORE

Might be time to give Colon a shot...

Colon will need a couple more weeks I would guess, just to get his pitch count up and sharpen his location. If he stays healthy, he'll be up by the June 1 ddeadline, when they have to bring him up or cut him.

Buchholz is probably the spot he'll take, you'd have to think. Barring an injury that is.

Somehow these things (like having too much starting pitching) end up working their way out on their own.

I am still not so sure about Colon, he has had a few good starts with the PawSox but that is it. His fastball is getting to the mid 90's but he is not a sure thing. What happens if he replaced Buchholz and starts to struggle. I hope Dave is right and it works out somehow...I have faith that Tito will work some magic.

Well, the thing about Colon is they have to call him up or release him by June 1. I don't think they'll be afraid to cut him if they don't think he's ready by then. But, if they do think he's ready they have to bring him up. So then Buchholz goes to the PawSox (most likely). If Colon struggles once he's up, they can always cut him or trade him and bring Buchholz back up. Colon is on a very low salary - they won't be hurt by cutting him if needed.

good point, do you think there is a chance Buchholz goes to the pen? I think it would be better for him to stay a starter with the PawSox to develop some more than be a short term fix in the pen.

I agree - working out of the bullpen is more different than people give credit for - at least at the big league level. Different workout routine, different mid-set, different approach to the game. Why get him absorbed into that routine when you are trying to groom him as a starter?

So, I agree - better to focus on making him a top notch starter while they can. Even if he goes to Pawtucket this month, I assure you he'll be called back up this season - at least when rosters expand, if not sooner.
