Rookie lefthander Bret Anderson 2-hit the Red Sox, pitching a gem for Oakland. Anderson was the A's highest touted prospect but has had mixed results so far this season. He lived up to the hype tonight.
The Sox continue to struggle in July, losing against teams that they are expected to beat.
The upcoming All-Star break will provide a well-needed rest for the team.

Penny pitched a typical game giving up 3 runs in 5 1/3 innings. Amalie Benjamin reported that he was throwing up between innings with some kind of sinus issue. RR took over and shut down the Twins for 1 2/3 innings and Oki pitched a hitless 9th. Then Papelbon gave up a hit and a two-run homer to Joe Mauer to put the Twins within one run before shutting the door for good.

Big Papi led off the bottom of the 8th with a double off of the monster and J-Bay drove him in to give the Red Sox the winning run.
Beckett was solid in his outing giving up 3 over 6 innings and the bullpen was excellent. Oki went 1 2/3 innings with no hits and 2 Ks and RR got an out on the 1 batter he faced. Paps made it interesting by giving up a lead-off walk in the 9th followed by a base hit. He then struck out the side to earn his 8th save of the season.
Dustin Pedroia left the game with a strained groin. The team has a travel day tomorrow as they fly out to the West Coast for the last time this season.

The shadiness surrounding the site for the new Red Sox spring training facility took another turn after the FBI started looking into some emails this month:
The agency had made a request to the Lee County attorney's office March 4 for e-mails to or from several county employees: the county manager, the director of public works, and the director and deputy director of transportation.
The FBI request cites interest in the e-mails of: Don Stilwell, Lee County manager; Jim Lavender, public words director; and Scott Gilbertson and Don DeBerry, transportation director and deputy director, respectively.
County Attorney David Owen said the request was complied with 2 1/2 weeks after it was received. It took three discs.
"What would be the federal interest?" Commissioner Frank Mann wondered.
Key words cited by the FBI may hold a clue.
For instance, the agency wants to see Stilwell's e-mails that contain, among other words, "Samir." Samir Cabrera is his son-in-law, convicted in federal court recently of wire fraud in connection with local real estate deals.
Old Don Stiwell was thinking he was in the clear when he gave this interview yesterday:
Racy e-mails received and forwarded by Lee County Manager Don Stilwell may be the straw that breaks the camel's back.
Commission Chairman Ray Judah said he had County Attorney David Owen and Deputy County Attorney Andrea Fraser view several racy videos and pictures that were included in thousands of emails received by the FBI.
The Red Sox jumped all over the Mets in the last tuneup of spring. Jed Lowrie hit a grand salami in the first and Tek hit a homer in the 6th. Rocco and Youk had two-hit games. Dice-K was solid giving up just one hit in four innings of work, but he did walk 4. The team now heads back to Boston to get ready for opening day on Monday against the Rays in a rematch of the ALCS.

The Lee County Board of County Commissioners votes today on the issue of keeping the Red Sox in Fort Myers for a 30 year lease on a new complex that includes a replica of Fenway Park. The new stadium would seat 12,000 and would open around 2011.

The Lee County board of commissioners approved a motion today 3-1 to move forward with an agreement to build a new Boston Red Sox spring-training stadium in south Lee County.
Do I go with Tek, the hero of last night? My Tek shirt is old enough that it does not have the "C" on it and this could be the last time he plays a game for the Red Sox.
Do I go with the Papelbon shirt? Paps ended last night's game with such determination that he embodies the confidence of the Red Sox.
Do I go with the Big Papi jersey? Ortiz got the series turned around but it is a home jersey and the Sox are on the road.
Do I go with my Yankee Hater "Sox in Seven" shirt from 2004? It does seem appropriate but it is aimed at the Yankees.
In the end I go with a no name Red Sox shirt. After all, this is going to take a team effort, but I did pick one with a shamrock on it just in case.

Mike Lowell should be back in the lineup and J.D. Drew will likely sit out against lefty Joe Saunders since Coco can bat from the right side. Drew will be available to pinch hit if needed. The official lineup will be posted around noon Pacific time. A sweep for the Red Sox will allow some much needed rest for some of the hurting members of the team.

For whatever reason the Red Sox cannot move past the Rays into first place. Beckett looked like the pitcher of '07 going into the 7th before he gave up his first run. He only gave up 3 hits on the night. The Rays pitching staff gave the Sox offense all kinds of trouble tonight; Boston could only manage 5 hits and 1 run. The game went into extra frames and Masterson gave up a walk-off single to end the game in the bottom of the 9th.

The Brewers have fired manager Ned Yost and have elevated former Red Sox coach Dale Sveum to the position of interim manager for the remainder of the season. Sveum is arguably the most famous third base coach in Red Sox history for sending runners home when they had no chance of scoring.
The Tampa Bay Rays are fading fast and could have been in the Red Sox rear-view mirror if not for a few breaks last week. Tonight's game starts a series that could send them into a tailspin before the playoffs start. If either team can sweep it is very likely they will end up being the division champs. The Red Sox enter the series looking like the team to beat while the Rays have been stuggling lately. Red Sox players and fans are used to these type of games, Rays fans are not. The Red Sox have played 9,871 of these kind of series, dating back to when Cy Young was hardly old - the kind of series that makes fever in the streets. The Rays got a taste of it at Fenway. Now it's in their breadbasket. The lead is one. Just one.
