No Brooms Tonight
Josh Beckett went 8 full tonight, allowing 7 hits and 3 runs while striking out 7 Halos. That and 2 home runs, 1 each by Ellsbury and Bay, were not enough to sweep the Angels out of Boston. Tied 3-3 going into the top of the 9th, Billy Wagner suffered his 1st loss in a Sox uni by a combination of Angel's small ball (sac bunt in the 9th) and Howie Kendrick going 3/4, including a HR, 2 RBI's, and 2 runs scored. Victor Martinez was back in the line up and connected for another hit.
I don't know much about the Angel's 2nd baseman, except that he's 26 yo, has a .304 average spanning his 4 season in the bigs so far, and has played 1st base for Ellay before moving over 1 base.

Big League Brain Fart by Toronto's Cecil
Jason Bay advanced from 1st to 3rd last night in the top of the 4th inning on rookie Brett Cecil's big league brain fart. The score was tied at 1-1 with Bay, who had drawn a walk to lead off the inning, standing on 1st base. After missing wide with a ball, Toronto catcher Rod Barajas weakly threw the ball back to Cecil who missed the catch, walked towards the SS to retrieve the ball, looked at it very quickly, and threw it into the Blue Jays dugout without calling for a time out. The ball was still live, Bay advanced to 2nd base and was eventually awarded 3rd base on the throwing error. Cecil had his arms up in the air as if to say 'What did I do?', as it took the umpires an extra moment or two to realize that he hadn't called for the time out. Bay turned out to be the winning run when two batters later, Mike Lowell singled to bring him in to score.

Beckett, Lowell and Bay Put Red Sox in the Driver's Seat
Jerry Remy joined the NESN crew in the second inning and thanked fans for their support. He blamed his absence on poor health following his surgery which led to an infection. He also said he had been suffering from depression and joked that the doctor said he could not watch games on NESN becasue Don Orsillio would lead to more depression.

Contract Talks With Bay Are On Again
The Red Sox and Jason Bay's agent talked about an extension during the All-Star break. The two sides are still not close but are both willing to work for a deal during the second half of the season. The Red Sox really need to keep his bat and he will be among the best free agents available in the offseason, so it is likely that he gets locked up before the end of the season to avoid a bidding war with teams like the Yankees.

Jason Bay Blogs About His All-Star Experience
Jason Bay has a blog post up over at WEEI.com where he talks about some of the highlight of the All-Star experience in St. Louis this week. Here are a few of the highlights:
So I become an American citizen and a week later I meet the President. That’s how it works for everybody, isn’t it?....from the time we went on the field one thing I couldn’t take my eyes off were the snipers on top of the stadium. Even in the fourth inning, I couldn’t stop looking at them because from where I was it looked like a video game, with the dark silhouette and with the sun setting. I’m thinking, “These are snipers! That’s so cool!”....Put it this way, you know you’re probably going to get fastballs from the best pitchers around, so you aren’t preaching patience. There’s no ‘Moneyballing’ it in this game.
We can only hope that he keeps on blogging for the rest of the season and for years to come when the Red Sox lock him up. Read more...

J-Bay's Turn To Slump
We have been through the Ortiz, Pedroia, and Youkilis slumps and now it is Jason Bay's turn. Up until the last series Bay was having a career year but he is 0 for his last 15 and his last 5 AB's were strikeouts earning him a Platinum Sombrero. Bay is not seeing the ball well right now but a day off and some work with Magadan should help. If all else fails they could use some of Ortiz's magic eye drops. Perhaps joining the U.S of A could help as well.
The Red Sox offense can carry a slumping Bay until he gets things right. The silver lining in the slump is it makes him seem human again as the Red Sox negotiate a deal with him for the future.

Jason Bay Sets New Sox Record
Jason Bay hit another multi-run home run in the bottom of the 1st inning of the Sox-Jays game tonight. It was his 11th multi-run home run in a row, surpassing Kevin Youkilis and Tony C. who each had hit 10 multi-run home runs. If his next home run is not a solo shot, he will have tied Ken Griffey, Jr. and Hank Aaron for the lead in that category.

How Much Is Jason Bay Worth?
Jason Bay has been fueling the Red Sox offense lately and fans are wondering when Theo is going to sign him to a long term contract. Red Sox assistant GM Jed Hoyer was asked about the negotiations yesterday during a live chat at Sawxheads.com:
Jed Hoyer: I can't specifically address any contract negotiations but I can say that Jason Bay has been outstanding for the organization in every way. He is a first-class teammate and he has fit in with out team seamlessly. Oh, and he seems to get big hits all the time too...
Bay is entering the prime of his career and will be looking for his big payout. He is 30 years old right now and his agent will ask for at least a 5 year deal. If he becomes a free agent the Yankees will get into the mix and throw all kinds of money at him to replace Johnny Damon in left. So should the Red Sox break the bank to lock him up for the long term? There are a couple of reasons the deal hasn't happened yet:
The economy: Teams are not offering the huge contracts that they were a few years ago and with the current financial situation the Red Sox might want to see if the sellout streak continues and if revenue will keep up.
Bay's career numbers: Jason Bay has only hit over .300 in 2005, in 2007 he hit .247. He is a career .284 hitter. He has had only 2 100+ RBI seasons. Last season he had 51 strikeouts with 22 walks with the Red Sox, those numbers are much better this season: 26 strikeouts with 28 walks.
This season he has looked very good at the plate and in the field and has been a good teammate who stays healthy. Is the 2009 Jason Bay the player you will get in the future? Theo needs a little more time to tell and after all, in Theo we trust.

Bay Wants To Explore the F.A. Market
News broke yesterday that talks between the Red Sox and Jason Bay have been halted for the time being. Rob Bradford sheds some light at what caused this at WEEI.com:
“I don’t think anybody in my situation wants to play for six years and then you earn the right to be a free agent and on some levels sell yourself short, and that doesn’t mean there doesn’t have to be some concessions,” Bay said. “But you put yourself in this position and I think it’s in my best interest to kind of explore. Not to say we’re ever going to go that far, but I definitely want to make sure it’s the right fit.

Regula talked to MLB.com about her brother's experience in Boston, "He's great. He said the guys have been unbelievable to him there," she said. "Jason is a chameleon. He adapts to any surrounding. At first I was worried and I tried to protect him, but I know he's going to be just fine."

Why Jason Bay Will Thrive at Boston

A couple of things he may not have had time to pack came from his childhood in British Columbia, Canada, where his father, Dave Bay, was a huge Red Sox fan.
"For whatever reason, my dad was a diehard Red Sox fan," Bay said. "I had a onesie when I was however old, and it was a Red Sox onesie and I still have it. I grew up my entire life with two big posters -- one of Jim Rice and the other of Carl Yastrzemski with the 'New England -- I Love You' saying under it. They are still in my parents' basement."
