Jason Varitek has declined arbitration, I guess Ken Rosenthal was right for a change. Boras is going betting that he can find a multi-year deal for his client, I would tend to think Tek's declining of arbitration is a sign that there is significant interest from a team other than Boston.
Read more...Ken Rosenthal says Jason Varitek will not accept arbitration. I am not one to put much stock in any of Rosenthal's reports so I would not consider this report as a given. Earlier today in the Herald Sean McAdam pointed out how Tek might benefit from accepting arbitration.
Read more...The Red Sox have hedged their bets on Varitek by offering him arbitration in case he signs elsewhere. Since Tek is a type A free agent the Red Sox would get a first round pick in the 2009 draft if he signs elsewhere. It was a surprise to see Byrd offered arbitration and it may benefit the Sox because it is doubtful he will accept.
Read more...Midnight has come and gone on the East Coast with no word about Gagne's arbitration decision. However, there is word from the Rangers that they are no longer interested in Gagne for next year. It appears that Scott Boras overplayed his hand on this one.

The role of the dice on Gagne by Theo and the boys might not work out so well. Boston offered Gagne arbitration so they could get a supplemental draft pick next year when he signs with another team. It has looked like Texas is interested in having him come back to close for them in '08 but that is not a given. Gagne should be able to get more $ on the Free Agent market and could get a chance at closing but the Winter Meetings have come and gone without a team picking him up. The Herald is now reporting that sources say he may want to accept arbitration and return to the Sox. He was awful last year in the setup role for Boston but it is possible he could regain his form and be a solid arm in the bullpen. Gagne has until tomorrow to decide. I can hear the boos already.
Dec. 1 is the deadline for teams to offer arbitration for players and according to the Boston Herald the Red Sox are going to offer arbitration to relief pitchers Mike Timlin and Eric Gagne. This means it is likely the Sox will get Timlin next year at a slightly higher salary for what will most likely be his last year in baseball. With Eric Gagne the Sox are rolling the dice; if he accepts arbitration they are stuck with him next year but if another team signs him they get draft picks. Texas will likely sign Gagne so the Sox should be off the hook.
