Gagne Signs With the Wrong Capitals

Eric Gagne must have been saddened when he learned that the Capitals team that was being furnished with steroids was the Washington Capitals and not the Quebec Capitales; the Can-Am league team Gagne just signed with.

"I'ts' too early to gauge the impact of his arrival on turnout at the stadium, but let's just say it's a big score for the team (and) for the league as well," said team owner Miles Wolff.
Probably not the "big score" that Gagne was looking for. I hope the team has stocked up with a large supply of baseballs for when Gagne starts serving up meatballs without the help of PED's.

Get Ready For Some Old Faces

Inter-league play starts up tomorrow with the Brew Crew coming to the Fens. There will be some interesting story lines as fan favorite Gabe Kapler returns to face his old squad. Kapler has been coming off the bench to pinch hit for the Brewers lately. Also returning to Fenway will be much maligned pitcher Eric Gagne. The steroid user has lost his job as the closer for Milwaukee after signing a $10 million contract in the off-season, get ready for some boos (for what he did last year) and some cheers (when he gives up a few long balls) when Gagne enters a game. The Sox will be facing Jeff Suppan, also a former Red Sox, when the 3 game series begins on Friday.

New Team, Same Gagne

In case you missed it, former Red Sox disaster Eric Gagne made his first regular season appearance with the Brewers yesterday. The new $10 million closer gave up a hit, walk and a 3 run homer to blow the save. I guess he has not been able to find a steroids dealer since leaving L.A. It sure is nice that he is someone else's problem now.

Gagne Issues An Apology For Causing A Distraction...Not For Using Roids

Eric Gagne issued an apology to his teammates on the Brewers (not the Sox) for the distraction he has created but he did not admit to taking steroids. This falls short on 2 levels....first of all, man up and admit what you did....second, apologize for the attempt at pitching you did with the Red Sox. If you are interested, here is some of what he said:
"I'm here to let you guys know that I feel bad for my family, what they had to go through, and all my friends and especially my teammates here in Milwaukee, I think that's just a distraction that shouldn't be taking place. I'm just here to help the Milwaukee Brewers get to the World Series and get to the playoffs, and that's all I really care about. "

Gagne Might Get Suspended....Brewers Fans Can Only Hope.

According to ESPN's Buster Olney, Eric Gagne is one of 14 players from the Mitchell Report who may have used performance enhancing drugs recently enough to warrant a 15 game suspension. This doesn't punish the Brewers, it punishes the teams that play the first 15 games against Milwaukee; no Gagne give-aways. The Brew Crew may start off another season with a lead in the NL Central and blow it again. Gagne will help that cause.

Gagne Going To Brew Crew

Eric Gagne will pitch for the Milwaukee Brewers next year according to the Journal Sentinel. Too bad he won't remain in the American League so the Red Sox could have a chance to hit against him. Gagne decline arbitration with Boston yesterday so the Red Sox get a supplemental draft pick because he was a Class B free agent. If he would have pitched well he could have been a Class A free agent but we all know how he pitched last season.

Rangers Say No To Gagne

Midnight has come and gone on the East Coast with no word about Gagne's arbitration decision. However, there is word from the Rangers that they are no longer interested in Gagne for next year. It appears that Scott Boras overplayed his hand on this one.

UPDATE: Gagne declines arbitration...Good Riddance!

Gagne Might Accept Arbitration

The role of the dice on Gagne by Theo and the boys might not work out so well. Boston offered Gagne arbitration so they could get a supplemental draft pick next year when he signs with another team. It has looked like Texas is interested in having him come back to close for them in '08 but that is not a given. Gagne should be able to get more $ on the Free Agent market and could get a chance at closing but the Winter Meetings have come and gone without a team picking him up. The Herald is now reporting that sources say he may want to accept arbitration and return to the Sox. He was awful last year in the setup role for Boston but it is possible he could regain his form and be a solid arm in the bullpen. Gagne has until tomorrow to decide. I can hear the boos already.

Theo Has Left The Building

Theo has left Nashville, he did not need the gorilla suit to escape the media because there was no big news to be had. Nashville was filled with rumors about Santana...it's close...the Yankees are in front...Angels want him..etc. But in the end it was fairly quiet. The Tigers and Marlins made the big news of the week and by today the only real news that came out of Nashville was Andruw Jones to LA for $18 million/year...kinda makes J.D. Drew look like a bargain. Theo went to Nashville not having to make a deal but with the wish to get Johan if he could. The Santana story does not end with the Winter Meetings; it will continue until he is traded or the trade deadline passes next season. The rumor mill will slow down but the Yankee/Red Sox pursuit of Santana will continue to make headlines. Theo will soon be forced to make a decision about Coco Crisp. How long can he wait on the Twins before Coco's value goes down? Also, time is ticking for Eric Gagne to accept arbitration, tomorrow is the deadline.

Arbitration for Timlin and Gagne

Dec. 1 is the deadline for teams to offer arbitration for players and according to the Boston Herald the Red Sox are going to offer arbitration to relief pitchers Mike Timlin and Eric Gagne. This means it is likely the Sox will get Timlin next year at a slightly higher salary for what will most likely be his last year in baseball. With Eric Gagne the Sox are rolling the dice; if he accepts arbitration they are stuck with him next year but if another team signs him they get draft picks. Texas will likely sign Gagne so the Sox should be off the hook.
