I Met Pedey Part 3: Pedroia Q&A

Since I am still reliving the awesome that was yesterday....getting to go to Fenway...go on the tour and meet Dustin Pedroia as part of the Dunkin' Donuts Perks Most Value Tour...I will let you all in on the Q&A that Pedey did with the fans.



I am a dork, but you will all benefit from my dorkiness. I took some notes while Pedey was answering questions. Dave O'Brien, radio sportscaster started off by asking Pedey a few questions and then turned it over to the crowd.

FAMILY

Pedey began by gushing about the newest Pedroia, Dylan. He says he already looks good in a Sox uniform and that he has that baby fat, but a few muscles emerging already. O'Brien asked if Pedey would be disappointed if Dylan didn't wanna play ball when he grew up. Pedey smiled and said no. He said as long as Dylan is a good kid and enjoys himself...then that is all he can ask for. It's obvious he is just in love with that little boy...as well he should be.

TITO

O'Brien asked Pedey about his relationship with Tito...saying it has been reported a lot about it. Pedey's response, "I just flat out hate him" followed by a big laugh. He went on to say how great Tito has been to him. He talked about when he first came up and struggled so much and Tito never gave up on him...and how that made such a difference. He said Tito was awesome and so grateful he gave him a chance.

He also said that Tito kicks his butt in cribbage daily and said he is finally willing to openly admit that Pedey is in fact not very good at it. I think it's the first time I've heard the adorable ego that is Pedey admit he is not good at anything.

JETER LOVE

Pedey admitted that he likes Jeter. We all knew this since they've been WBC BFFs for a while now. He said that Jeter has been to the World Series 6 times, won 4...and for someone to have that level of success, everyone respects him. I agree. I can't say I have Jeter hate. I have to respect the way Jeter has played the game, even if he plays for EVIL.

MIDSEASON ADDITIONS

Pedey said he has really enjoyed having Gonzo in the lineup. He said that when he came up in 06, Gonzo was on the team...so it didn't take much time for them to get comfy working the double team action together. He said that Gonzo just makes it look easy.

Pedey also talked a bit about V-MART. He said that Theo easily got the best available player on the market in V MART. And made a special note that he did it last year with JayBay as well. Pedey said that the Sox were one game away from the World Series last year and that having V MART on the team...it should bring us that one extra game we need to get back there. Sounds like people on the team are really loving having V MART around.

O'Brien asked about JayBay's upcoming free agency and if Pedey tried to talk him into resigning. You could tell Pedey didn't want to answer this one. He said that JayBay has to take care of his family...first and foremost. He said that he doesn't really get the whole free agency stuff since he lucky never had to be a part of it. He did joke that a lifetime supply of Dunkin' Donuts might get the deal done.

OTHER FAV BALLPARKS

Pedey was asked what other ballparks besides Fenway he likes to play in. He said he likes to play in Anaheim. "The park is nice, the weather is always nice and they have the rally monkey there." Giggles. He also said he likes playing in Seattle. I guess Pedey is not bothered by the constant trains...as we all know I am. DAMN TRAINS. Sorry, back to Pedey. He also said when they played interleague at Houston...he liked that park. He did finish off by saying there is no better ballpark in the world than Fenway Park. Well done sir, well done.

SUPERSTITIONS

Someone asked if Pedey had any superstitions before or during the game. He said he didn't and that he didn't believe in it. He said that people get their usual routine, but that he didn't think that made a difference. He said he could go right from an event like this to playing the game...and would be fine. He did make fun of Nomar playing with his batting gloves for a bit. It was cute.

He was asked to share a fellow teammate's superstition. He said that there are 3 bathroom stalls in the bathroom. A certain player (which player???....it's for me to know and you to find out) came into the clubhouse during the game and went to the bathroom...came back a minute later and went back into another stall. Pedey asked what he was doing...and said player said, "I didn't get a hit. I'm gonna try this stall." Good to know that actual baseball players do the same stupid things I do during the game...and think they matter. Someday...I'll write a post where we can list all our superstitions. Mine are pretty ridiculous, but I still do them.

PEDEY AND THE MEDIA

Pedey obvious is not a fan of the media attention in Boston. He went on to say you have to have a thick skin to play in Boston. He was asked if he reads any of the blogs or social media. He said no, he doesn't. He said the only thing he uses his computer for is checking his fantasy football team. LOL He said all that stuff can get overwhelming if you let it, so most of the players just ignore it. He did say that he sees that he has a Twitter...and made the point that it was not him. He said he didn't care and hopes the guy is having fun being him on a computer. Oh if only Pedey knew he wasn't alone...with the fake Jacoby and the fake Jed.

Pedey went out of his way to say that "O% of what the media reports is true."

And as I said before, Pedey went off a little bit on the idea of the sports media having an opinion if or how the Red Sox should celebrate clinching the post season. Pedey said that the team felt that last night would be the night to clinch. He was right...it just wasn't done with a win. When asked what he thought of the sports radio talk about it...I actually wrote down the quote:

"We'll handle this. We don't need sports media to decide how we should handle it. We are going to do whatever the hell we want to."

PEDEY AND HIS #S

Someone asked Pedey how he thought his numbers compared to the great Red Sox second basemen. Pedey said that he doesn't really pay attention to #s...followed by "I don't count good." He said that the only stat he really pays attention to is runs scored.

Pedey said that the great second baseman Bobby Doerr asked him to sign a ball for him. Pedey agreed and when he sent it to him...he said, "Hey, doesn't he send me one back???" So, Bobby Doerr just recently sent him a ball back. Doerr wrote on it, "Dustin, Congrats on winning the MVP." and did not sign his name. Pedey asked who the ball was from....they told him Doerr. Pedey said that "doesn't he have a name??" and that someone might wanna explain to Doerr how this whole signed baseball thing works.

YANKS SERIES

Pedey talked about that series. He begrudging admitted that losing the two games in KC might have changed the game plan going into NY. He also talked about watching Lester getting hit. He said that as a batter...he has been there in those situations. He said that seeing him being hit in the knee was really scary since Lester is such a huge key to any post season success. Pedey said that he would rather be drilled in the ribs anytime than be hit in the knee. Interesting.

DOUBLE PLAY HIJINXS

Someone asked Pedey what is the worst he has ever gotten from a runner sliding into him and taking him out when he is trying to turn a double play. He said it was the ChiSox's Carlos Quentin. He said that it was ironic because Carlos is one of his best friends in the league. He said they knew each other from the college days and what not. When Carlos took him out...Pedey went down flat. He said it knocked him out cold. Carlos got up, asked him if he was ok. Pedey said, "Umm, not really. What were you doing? I weigh 160 pounds." Carlos's response, "Dude, you are on the other team." He chuckled.

That's about it...at least what I can make out of my spotty memory and my scribbly notes.

Oh Yeah...Pedey isn't a big fan of hockey. When he said that...some members of the crowd gasped. He assured them...."I am a Bruins fan now. Calm down."

It was a good time had by all. I feel so lucky to be there and get to just listen to Dustin talk. He really is down to earth and just seems like a normal guy. He also seems pretty honest. They was never a time when I felt he was given the "canned" answer.

Should the Red Sox have celebrated? Hell Yeah!

So, the Red Sox clinched the wild card last night when the Angels nicely beat the Rangers. We all were hoping that the boys would clinch with a win and we'd get to see a crazy celebration on the field...in front of the fans. However, our late innings rally was a run or two too short.

There is a lot of discussion last night and this morning...that the Red Sox should not have had a celebration following their 5th straight loss. A lot of people think it is bad form....or embarrassing.

I am not one of those people. I'm gonna give you just one little highlight of my Pedey Q&A article this evening. Dave O'Brien started off the Q&A asking Pedey some basic questions before turning it over to the fans.

One question he asked Pedey was about how they planned to celebrate when they clinch. O'Brien said that a lot of sports radio people were discussing if they should be celebrating at all and in what way...

It's one of the only times I say Pedey get annoyed and a little disgrunted. His response was...that he did not feel it was the media, sports radio or anyone else's job to decide how or if they will celebrate. He followed it with this statement, "We're the ones who will put the work in to clinch, so we can decide to celebrate any damn way we want." That was followed by a bunch of cheers...myself included. LOUDLY.

The Red Sox won the wildcard...and we know for sure that they are going to the post season. I am celebrating that. I think the Red Sox should celebrate that. It would have been better to celebrate clinching because of a win...instead of a Ranger loss, but it's still pretty kick arse.

My thoughts...the Red Sox put the work in all season long in order to be in the position to clinch, no matter how it comes. A lot of other teams would wish to be in that position. When you know you are going to the post season...champagne should fly...Pap should wear almost no clothing and don a hat made out of a beer case.

All it matters...in my little old world...is that you got in, not how you got in. And maybe all of this spectulation on how the right way to "celebrate" is why the Red Sox decided to celebrate behind the closed doors of the clubhouse and not let the media in. It's their celebration....and Pedey is right...they can do it however the hell they want.

I Met Pedey Photo Edition 9/29/09

Hey all! So, Fenway West was lucky enough to get an invite to the Dunkin Donuts Perks Most Valuable Tour with Dustin Pedroia. Matt lives all the way in California, so he awesomely offered the opportunity to attend and blog about the event to me. Thanks Matt! I have a whole story...I will share it soon. But first...here is a quick photo post of the event.

I arrived at Fenway at 10am after battling some pretty hairy traffic. I actually ran from my car to the meet up spot with Jayne, who was my Fenway date.

First thing we did....was head to the BATTING CAGES!!!!!

Here is my batting stance. Trying to look all bad ass.


Here is my trying to reach down and get a low pitch. I don't believe I was successful! LOL. In fact, I hit 3 balls...fouled them off. It was not the best hitting, but well...as I stated to the group, I haven't played baseball since 3rd grade. But...you only live once and if you get the chance to bat in the Fenway batting cages...you take that chance!


Here is Jayne batting. She hit all 10 balls thrown to her. She is a rock star.

Next we took a tour of Fenway Park.


Green Monster. Me. Awesome. Sauce.


Me. Going INTO the Green Monster. I was SO psyched to hear we could go inside. I've always dreamed of walking around in there. DREAM COME TRUE!!!!


Inside the Monster. I could have taken a million different pictures. I wish I had hours to just read everything. A cute little kid asked where the bathroom was that Manny used. I had to break it to him that there is in fact...no bathroom in the Monster. LOL.



Numbers inside the Monster. Pretty gosh darn cool. I don't care how hot or cold it gets in there...I would SO do that job for free.


On the way back to the stands...Jayne and I sneaked away to the dugout and took a quick pic. I couldn't help myself. I wanted to go inside the dugout, but I wanted to not get kicked out more.

Next...we went up on top of the Monster. I've never been up there before....so...I was a happy camper. I'll see a game from there....SOMEDAY.



Last part of the tour was going through the Press Box. Here is where Don Orsillo lives...and Jerry...and Eck...and Dave....and sometimes someone who I want to be my BFF...Sean Casey.

Some people were standing next to the trophies...maybe to even out the pic. Not me, I came up and said, "I'm standing on this side...so I can touch you." Pedey smiled and said, "Come on over." Took the pic. I shook his hand...told him I was a NYer, but loyal Sox fan...and was on my way.

How does Tito pick his lineup?

Ortiz, Varitek, Martinez, Youkilis, Lowell, Kochman, Kotteras, Gonzalez, Lowrie, Green, and Pedroia are all involved in Tito’s daily ordeal of trying to come up with a line-up for the day. You could almost pull the whole outfield onto that list, as Youkilis has done some time in left field, but for this discussion we’ll stay with the DH and infield positions:

Ortiz~ DH, 1B
Varitek~ C
Martinez~ C, 1B
Youkilis~ 1B, 3B
Lowell~ 3B
Kochman~ 1B
Kotteras~ C
Gonzalez~ SS
Lowrie~ SS, 3B, 2B

Pedroia~ 2B

You can see how many players and positions are involved, it’s downright incestuous. Actually, any one of them could fill the DH slot.

An unconfirmed source reports that Tito has used several methods of picking his line-up for the day: dart board, wheel of fortune, roll of the dice, pulling straws, NASA computers, tarot cards, tea leaves, astrology, palm readings, consult with a team of Jamesian statisticians, and rock/paper/scissors. The only exception to these rituals comes when Dustin Pedroia beats Tito at cribbage. Then Pedey gets to pick the line-up.

Clay Does it Again

Clay Buchhoz had a no decision in game one of today's doubleheader against the Rays, but he is the reason the Red Sox won; he pitched 7 innings and gave up just 1 run on 5 hits. He took another step in becoming the #3 starter if the Red Sox make the post-season.  Oki pitched a perfect 8th and Papelbon came in to earn his 36th save in the 9th.

The offense was having a hard time getting hits off of Rays starter Matt Garza, but in the 6th Pedey just missed a homer with a wall-ball double and V-Mart drove him to put the Sox on the board.  Pedroia also had a 2-run homer off of Garza in the 8th.

Game 1 of the Rangers doubleheader is delayed until at least 5pm so the Red Sox now have a 3.5 game lead in the wild-card standings.

Pedroia Talks About Distractions

Dustin Pedroia became a dad yesterday. He spoke with Rob Bradford of WEEI.com about some of the distractions he has had this season.

“I wasn’t really worried about baseball,” he said. “I was worried about my wife and my baby. That’s the biggest thing. We’ve just had to deal with it day to day. I’ve just been trying to come out here every day and help us win, and then go home and take care of her....It’s been kind of a weird year. After last year, I had such a great year, and then there were all the expectations. My biggest goal this year was to be consistent. That’s all you can do as an everyday player. That’s all I’ve been focusing on, being consistent. The stuff with my wife happened and it doesn’t take away from what I’m trying to do. Obviously, that’s more important than this. But I still have a job to do.”

Pedroia will be back with the team tonight in Toronto.

Pedroia's Book Becomes Vehicle for Trash Talking

Dustin Pedroia was on WEEI today to promote his new book Born to Play. In the interview he responded to Tito's swipe at him:

On Tito saying he’ll read Pedroia’s new book when he’s in the bathroom: (Laughing) “I have to put up with him everyday, and it just gets worse and worse everyday. I don’t know how he does it.”

He also went after his teammates when he was given the chance:

On what his teammates have said to him about his new book and the 2009 Red Sox in general: “Well first off, I don’t even know if half of our team can read. We don’t have the sharpest guys here.

Pedroia talks more trash than anyone on the team. He will be signing copies of his book on Thursday at 5 PM at the Barnes & Noble on Boylston St.

Pedroia Talks About His Decision to Skip All-Star Game

Dustin Pedroia will not be in St. Louis tonight and fans should all support him in his decision. His wife went into premature labor and was admitted to the hospital to postpone the delivery.

“It was pretty tough, obviously,’’ Pedroia said. “I’ve got to be with my wife right now. It’s more important. Obviously I’m extremely honored to be selected by the fans. I wish I could be there, but I hope everybody understands....She’s kind of the same right now,’’ Pedroia said. “That’s one of the reasons I was hoping she’d get better. That’s why I put it off to the last minute. But hopefully the next few days she gets better.’’

Jason Bay, Youk, Beckett, and Papelbon will all be there to represent the Red Sox and ensure home field advantage this October.

Pedroia always is playing the role of the scrappy underdog who comes up big. Why not one more time? Let's make sure the AL MVP is our starting Second Basemen for the ALL STAR GAME. That only seems right.

All Star Game: Still Get Out The Youk Vote!

Ok, I might be a little All Star Vote obsessed lately. But no fear, I'm not done flapping my gums about the All Star Voting just yet. We still have until 11:59 PM on Thursday July 2nd to vote for the All Star Game.

So, if you have not voted yet...please get on over to here and vote. You can vote 25 times for every email address you have. If you are like me and have more than one email address....you can vote a bunch more times than 25. Feel free to talk your neighbors, co-workers, friends, paper boy, etc into voting as well.

They have announced the standings this afternoon...and here is how our boys are doing in the hunt for who will represent the AL in the 2009 All Star Game:

First Base: As of this very moment...our own Kevin Youkilis has overtaken the 1st base of evil aka Mark Teixeira. That, my Fenway West friends...is awesomesauce. See? Annoyingly clicking those VOTE NOW boxes over and over again actually made a difference. Last time the results were reported, Youk was trailing Teixeira by about 35,000 votes. Now...Youk is leading Teixeira by a little more than 40,000 votes. Of course, that does not mean we can breathe a sigh of relief and stop voting. Those evil Yankee fans could always make a final push in the last few days. So, I will continue my war cry. VOTE YOUK, VOTE OFTEN!!!

Second Base: Last time we reported, Dustin Pedroia was trailing Ian Kinsley by almost 60,000 votes. NOW...Pedey is only trailing Kinsley by 6,830 votes. That's right SIX THOUSAND and THIRTY votes. So, if we can swing 70,000 votes in Youk's favor in the last week....we can sure swing a little shy of 7K. The reigning MVP should be starting in the All Star Game, dontcha agree??? Head on over to mlb.com and get to voting for Pedey. It's the only responsible thing you can do.

Third Base: Mikey Lowell is currently in 3rd place behind Evan Longorio and Alex Rodriguez. Mikey is currently on the DL and I am in denial about that, so that's all I am going to say about that. Except...I love that Longo is still in the lead over A-Rod by over a million votes. That means everything is right in the world.

Short Stop: Jed Lowrie is still in 5th place....which is still all kinds of hilarious. That is all.

Catcher: Jason Varitek is still is 2nd place behind Joe Mauer. I love Tek, but that only seems fair. Tek is currently ahead of the Yanks Jorge Posada...and two guys who have been in trade rumors to maybe head to Boston to be the "catcher of the future" Rangers Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Indians Victor Martinez (both trades will probably never ever ever happen).

Outfield: Everything is about the same. JayBay is still in 1st place. Ellsbury is in 6th place and JD Drew has moved up 10th place. Let's remember that even though JD Drew is not the most popular member of the Sox, he is still trailing the evil traitor that is Johnny Damon (8th place).

We still have a few days to vote for the All Star Game. SO...let's DO IT!

Top'a Da Ordah

Dustin Pedroia is batting .218 in the lead-off spot this season. Hitting coach Dave Magadan thought Pedroia was trying to hit for power too much:

He’s pressing a little bit and just like everybody else he’s trying to get two or three hits in every at bat. He’s just got to slow everything down, let the ball come to him and hit the ball where it’s pitched rather than trying to do too much with it.

It was looking like Francona was going to make a switch soon but Pedey is starting to heat up. He had multiple hits in his last two games and may stay at the top spot a little longer. With Ells finding his grove again and getting on base it seems like a good time to put him back up top but Lou Merloni of CSNNE likes Jacoby batting 7th:

Which brings me to my next point, I like Jacoby in the 7 hole. I realize that all hitters want to hit at the top of the order. Its a pride thing, I get it. But like i just said, the middle of the order isn’t where i want this team to "manufacture" runs, its the bottom third where they should and with Jacoby hitting 7th that’s exactly what can happen. He no longer has the big boppers hitting behind him so every time he gets on base he thinking one thing……steal this base.

Pedroia put up huge numbers last year batting second and it seems like the place he belongs. Youk is in a mini slump of his own so batting Pedey in front of him may not be the right move now but Francona needs to get Ells back at the top and move Pedroia to batting second before the All-Star break.

Red Sox and the YES Network Plays of the Game

So, most people know I am a member of Red Sox Nation living in New York. Some days it is harder than others, but not today! 8 games in a row and a come from behind victory at that.

I usually watch all the Red Sox games on NESN through mlb.tv (highly recommend it BTW), but when it is Red Sox/Yankees games, I get stuck watching the games on the YES network. I know, feel my pain.

However, one of the great things...is when the Sox beat the Yankees...you get to watch the post game coverage on the YES network. You get to watch the YES guys wonder what went so horrible wrong. You get to watch Girardi get grilled by the press. You get to watch Jeter pretend like the Red Sox are not in his head. You get to watch Nick Swisher explain that his base running just really isn't all that bad and that poor little Jason Bay just tricked him.

Last night, here were the YES Plays of the Game:

Player of the Game:



Brad Penny. Yes, you heard me right. It wasn't CC Sabathia or anyone else wearing pinstripes. It was B Penny who was the best we have seen him yet on the mound. I'm getting to the point that I really don't want to see Penny traded, even though it is probably inevitable. We ended up seeing a pitcher duel between Brad Penny and CC Sabathia, who would have predicted that?

Defensive Play of the Game:



Rocco Baldelli making a spectacular diving catch in center field in the 8th inning. It was all kinds of awesome. A picture cannot just convey how beautiful that catch was. It reminded me why I am so happy that Rocco decided to come and join us this season. Good job there Rico Baldy!!

Overall Play of the Game:



Dustin Pedroia's 10 pitch at-bat where he worked a walk and seemed to unravel CC Sabathia. I don't think Nick Green got enough credit for the hit he got in front of Pedey's at bat, but that doesn't take away from the spectacular at-bat that Pedey had. He kept CC working and obviously frustrated him. Plus, with CC's pitch count, he basically pushed him right to the limit and then over it. It was a sure thing of beauty and to see Pedey's firey response when he got Ball Four. All kinds of awesome. I agree. That at-bat was the game changer.

The YES Network got it right and yeah, it had to hurt.

Pedroia and the Varmint

After a squirrel was chased into the Red Sox dugout Francona and the rest of the team made fun of Pedroia's squirrel like-qualities:

"I told Pedey it looked like - anybody have AOL, they have that celebrity look-alike? - when he was behind him at second, that's what it reminded me of," Francona said.

"That was pretty funny," Pedroia said. "I've never seen a squirrel running around. I got made fun of pretty much half the game.

"That was pretty much a distraction the whole night for me.

"It was kind of cool seeing that thing running around. Our hunting guys on our team, they were licking their chops."

Pedey & Tek Adorableness.

Sometimes I get annoyed at people's constant talk about just how small Dustin Pedroia is. I think it takes away from the natural talent the guy has.

However, I have to say....is this picture from the Globe not absolutely freakin' adorable? It was taken just after Pedey hit a ball that just cleared the wall for a 3 run homer. It screams father/son baseball game. LOVE IT!

Pedroia always bringing the FUNNY!

I love Pedey for many reasons, but his snarky sense of humor is on the top of the list. NESN basically interviewed everyone and their brother about the game last night. My biggest chuckle came from our resident MVP...one Mr. Dustin Pedroia. He was asked what he thought about Jacoby Ellsbury's fielding record last night of 12 put outs. Here is what he had to say:

"It's under review because he called me off. Stat rat. He's a stat rat."
