Kevin Youkilis' comments about playing in Boston are understandable especially during the dog-days of August. It will be a one day story and best and Red Sox fans do not need to read too much into it. If you want to see what a real rant looks like watch below:

Ask your co-workers, family, neighbors, mailman, hair dresser, etc...if you can use their email address to vote for the All Star Game...and then get to voting.

Youkilis was listed as barely in the lead of the evil King of Douchebaggery Mark Teixeira. However, we know those Yanks fans are going to be getting out the vote for their guy...so we can't let them beat us in the final hours. And let's not forget about our adorable, little Pedey. He is currently in a tough battle for the starting Second Base spot with the Rangers Ian Kinsley. Pedey was listed in 2nd place, but only by about 6000 votes. We were able to get Youk into the lead, so while we are voting our little booties off for Youk...we are voting for Pedroia too, RIGHT? Pedroia always is playing the role of the scrappy underdog who comes up big. Why not one more time? Let's make sure the AL MVP is our starting Second Basemen for the ALL STAR GAME. That only seems right.

Ok, I might be a little All Star Vote obsessed lately. But no fear, I'm not done flapping my gums about the All Star Voting just yet. We still have until 11:59 PM on Thursday July 2nd to vote for the All Star Game.

They have announced the standings this afternoon...and here is how our boys are doing in the hunt for who will represent the AL in the 2009 All Star Game:
First Base: As of this very moment...our own Kevin Youkilis has overtaken the 1st base of evil aka Mark Teixeira. That, my Fenway West friends...is awesomesauce. See? Annoyingly clicking those VOTE NOW boxes over and over again actually made a difference. Last time the results were reported, Youk was trailing Teixeira by about 35,000 votes. Now...Youk is leading Teixeira by a little more than 40,000 votes. Of course, that does not mean we can breathe a sigh of relief and stop voting. Those evil Yankee fans could always make a final push in the last few days. So, I will continue my war cry. VOTE YOUK, VOTE OFTEN!!!
Second Base: Last time we reported, Dustin Pedroia was trailing Ian Kinsley by almost 60,000 votes. NOW...Pedey is only trailing Kinsley by 6,830 votes. That's right SIX THOUSAND and THIRTY votes. So, if we can swing 70,000 votes in Youk's favor in the last week....we can sure swing a little shy of 7K. The reigning MVP should be starting in the All Star Game, dontcha agree??? Head on over to mlb.com and get to voting for Pedey. It's the only responsible thing you can do.
Third Base: Mikey Lowell is currently in 3rd place behind Evan Longorio and Alex Rodriguez. Mikey is currently on the DL and I am in denial about that, so that's all I am going to say about that. Except...I love that Longo is still in the lead over A-Rod by over a million votes. That means everything is right in the world.
Short Stop: Jed Lowrie is still in 5th place....which is still all kinds of hilarious. That is all.
Catcher: Jason Varitek is still is 2nd place behind Joe Mauer. I love Tek, but that only seems fair. Tek is currently ahead of the Yanks Jorge Posada...and two guys who have been in trade rumors to maybe head to Boston to be the "catcher of the future" Rangers Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Indians Victor Martinez (both trades will probably never ever ever happen).
Outfield: Everything is about the same. JayBay is still in 1st place. Ellsbury is in 6th place and JD Drew has moved up 10th place. Let's remember that even though JD Drew is not the most popular member of the Sox, he is still trailing the evil traitor that is Johnny Damon (8th place).
We still have a few days to vote for the All Star Game. SO...let's DO IT!

The last post mentioned the All Star Game....and how Tim Wakefield is definitely worthy. I can't believe he's never been to the All Star Game before. If any year, it is this year and not just because I had to apologize to Timmy for all the smack I had been talking about him.
However, pitchers aren't voted on by the fans. But there is still a lot of voting that Red Sox fans can be doing. Voting remains open until 11:59 PM on Thursday July 2nd. Head on over to redsox.com and get to voting. Go NOW...we'll wait.

First Base: As of RIGHT NOW, the evil Mark Teixeira of the NYY is beating our own lil' Kevin Youkilis but only by about 35,000 votes. If you vote for nothing else...YOU MUST GO AND VOTE FOR YOUK. The idea of Teixeira and his douchebaggery starting over Youk is unacceptable. UNACCEPTABLE.
Second Base: Pedey is currently in 2nd place in the standings to Ian Kinsler of the Rangers. He is behind by about 60,000 votes. So, while you are over there voting for YOUK (and you are voting for Youk right?)...why dontcha vote for the AL MVP Dustin Pedroia while you are at it?
Third Base: Mikey Lowell is currently in 4th place behind Evan Longoria, Alex Rodriguez and Michael Young. Mikey would need about 1.5 million votes to take over the lead. Please feel free to vote for Mikey as well, but as long as Longo stay in front of ARod, I am cool with the voting results.
Shortstop: Chuckles. What I find comical about this is that Jed Lowrie is currently in 5th place in the results. You know...that Jed Lowrie who hasn't played games and is currently rehabbing his way back to us? Derek Jeter is leading all the others and has a pretty comfortable lead. As long as you don't vote for the Yankees own "twinkle toes"....feel free to vote for whoever you'd like. I'll admit it, I sometimes vote for Jed just because I miss him so much.
Catcher: Jason Varitek is currently in second place behind Joe Mauer. He is about a million votes behind, but well...come on, it's Joe Mauer. I love Tek something fierce and hope he makes the roster, but I think Joe Mauer probably deserves the start. However, I still vote for Tek. Homer all the way, I am.
Outfield: Jason Bay is rocking the outfield and has the most votes of ANYONE. Jacoby Ellsbury is currently in 6th place (in front of Johnny Damon in 7th...tee, hee, hee) and JD Drew is in 11th place. Jason doesn't really need your vote, but I say give it to him anyways....and feel free to shower votes to Ells and JD while you are at it. I'll continue my JD LOVE and say he should be way higher up the list than 11th. Johnny Damon is beating JD Drew people...just think about that for about 2.2 seconds. OK...now you the traitor rage and go vote for JD Drew a few times over.
So...it goes without saying. You should make sure you get your 25 votes in before the end of Thursday night. And...then you should find all those other email addresses you have and then vote 25 times for each one. You have no idea how many email addresses I have and I have voted 25 times with each one.

Kevin Youkilis played the first of two rehab games last night for the Paw Sox."I feel good. I’m just excited to get out there and start playing some more baseball," he said. "Hopefully everything goes well the next two days and I’ll be back in the [Red Sox] lineup on Wednesday. I’m slowly getting back. These next two days will help me get back in baseball shape. A lot of times you try to work out off the field and rehab, but it’s not the same as getting the spikes on and getting in the dirt."
He went 0-2 with a walk last night and will play DH in his next game.
Julio Lugo left last night's game in the 8th inning with a groin strain:
"More of a precaution than anything. I've been playing through it for days. It's just a little tighter," Lugo said. "Today, when I got that hit to left field, and tried to go to second, it got tight then. Through the course of the game, it got a little tighter. But I'm going to work it out," Lugo said.Gil Velazquez came in because he is the better defensive shortstop on the bench and it was late in the game. Lugo will likely miss today's game and could be back on Tuesday when the Red Sox play Toronto. Nick Green should be in at short today.
Don't blame the WBC for Youk's ankle. According to the Projo:
his left ankle problems are related to a flare up of plantar fasciitis, and are not an injury he sustained in the World Baseball Classic.
Read more...Most commonly, heel pain is caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia — the tissue along the bottom of your foot that connects your heel bone to your toes. The condition is called plantar fasciitis (PLAN-tur fas-e-I-tis).
Plantar fasciitis causes stabbing or burning pain that's usually worse in the morning because the fascia tightens (contracts) overnight. Once your foot limbers up, the pain of plantar fasciitis normally decreases, but it may return after long periods of standing or after getting up from a seated position.
In most cases, you can overcome the pain of plantar fasciitis without surgery or other invasive treatments. And you can take steps to prevent plantar fasciitis from recurring.
First it was Pedroia, now it's Youk who's injured and out of the WBC. Kevin Youkilis will not return to Team USA for the remainder of the Classic:
"a mild left ankle sprain, as well as mild Achilles tendonitis in his left foot."MRIs taken on both problems were negative. The Sox said Youkilis "will wear a walking boot for the next several days but is not expected to miss significant time."
This should add a little fuel to the "is the WBC worth it?" fire.

Jason Varitek confirmed he wants to remain with the Red Sox after meeting with John Henry for 90 minutes last night. The meeting could have brought the two sides closer to a deal but Varitek did not have much to say when the Globe tried to contact him:
Communicating via text message after the meeting, Varitek would say only that the meeting "went OK" and that there was "nothing to report." The Red Sox’ captain and longtime catcher said he met with Henry "to speak [about] how I feel" and answered "yes" when asked if his desire was to return to the team for the 2009 season.Read more...
The Boston Red Sox have reached an agreement to keep Kevin Youkilis with the team for 4 more years at $10 mil/year. It was reported last month that the team were having a hard time reaching an agreement and would push back negotiations for a while.
A few weeks ago Rob at The Bottom Line took questions from readers for Kevin Youkilis to answer. Today we have the answers to all of those questions including the one submitted by Fenway West:
What pitcher on the Red Sox would you least like to face as a hitter?
"All the Red Sox pitchers fear me more than I fear them."
Kevin Youkilis will join Dustin Pedroia on Team USA in the World Baseball Classic this spring. No word on whether he will play 1st or 3rd base.
“For me, it’d be cool to represent my country,” Youkilis said. “If they ask me, yeah. Yeah, definitely. I’ll play. Cool experience. I’ve done a lot of great things, and that could be an added thing to put on the plate.”
UPDATE: David Wright and Chipper Jones will play third so Youk will be at first.
Pedrioa signs a big contract, the Sox need a flexible corner infielder for the long term, and huge sums of money are being discussed for Teixeira. All of those things are going to help Kevin Youkilis as he begins his negotiaions for a long term deal with the Red Sox. Youk came close to winning the MVP this season, he is a great defensive player, and he takes pitches well to fit the Bill James/ Theo mold. Look for the Red Sox to go at least 5 years in this deal with a salary around $10 million/year.
If Tito's gum was not bad enough, you can now bid on Josh Beckett's or Kevin Youkilis' game worn undies. I'm sure you can put them in a nice frame in your office to show your love for the Red Sox.
