No post season for Tazawa

Junichi Tazawa was placed on the 60 day DL today by the Boston Red Sox. Boston.com reports that he has a mild groin strain and will be replaced on the roster by infielder Chris Woodward.

Does this make room for Paul Byrd on the post season roster? We'll see how Theo and Tito deal with the post season pitching plans.

Tazawa Gets Shelled

Junichi Tazawa looked like he was throwing BP to the White Sox last night. He only lasted 4 innings after giving up 1o hits and 9 earned runs.

The Red Sox offense tried to rally back and cut the deficit with 2 homers by J.D. Drew and another by Alex Gonzales but it proved to be not enough.

Jacoby Ellsbury left the game early after he injured his ankle on a slide. The injury was reported as a mild ankle sprain which will cause him to miss a game or two.

The highlight of the night came when shortstop Nick Green was called on to save the bullpen by pitching the 8th and 9th innings. He was throwing close to 90 on the gun and was able to get through both innings without giving up a hit, although he did walk 3.

The Lost Penny

Brad Penny is out of the rotation. With Wake returning on Wednesday, Penny is now out of the starting rotation. RedSox.com has TBA for the starting pitcher for Thursday, but I'm picking Tazawa for the start. I’m calling it right now.

Beckett
Lester
Wakefield
Buchholz
Tazawa

(JIC you were scratchin’ yer noggin.)

And then Dice-K will be along momentarily.

From a 9 run loss to a 13 run win: SWEET!

That train called New York Yankees that came through last night and flattened that Penny that was sitting on the track derailed today after a 14-1 woodshed session administered by the Red Sox. The Sox were looking to rebound after being swept in a 4 game series in New York earlier this month. Last night's 9 run loss had everyone scratching their heads wondering who in the hell are these guys? They're not the ones who lost 8 straight to the Sox earlier this season.

Kevin Youkilis led the charge to right the ship, albeit one day late (no thanks to Penny), with 2 HR's, 3 hits total, and 6 RBI's. Junichi Tazawa tossed a great game as he scattered 8 hits over 6 scoreless innings. All the bazillions of dollars the Yanks spent on Burnett couldn't save him today as the Sox pounced on him for 7 runs before the 2nd inning was over. They never looked back, totalling up 14 runs on 15 hits. The lonesome Yankee run was a moot point solo shot by Swisher in the 7th inning.

Michael Bowden Makes His Statement

Michael Bowden is one of the Sox’s top prospects. He made his debut in August of last year and limited the White Sox to 2 runs over 5 innings. He’s had a fair season in Pawtucket, but it’s been an up and down season so far for him. He has a 4-5 W-L record, 3.23 ERA, 108+ IP, 89 H’s, 78 K’s, and 41 BB’s. Perhaps after getting bypassed first by Bard, and now by Cabrera, he’s decided to stake his claim by tossing 5+ innings of 3 H, shutout ball on Tuesday.

Buchholz, Cabrera, Bard, and Tazawa have all made it to Boston since graduating from Pawtucket this year so far. Bowden could be next, but there are also a couple of other pitchers that are putting up some noticeable numbers, including Marcus McBeth, Rocky Cherry, Billy Traber, and Jose Vaquedano. Javier Lopez has been a bit streaky at times, stringing several scoreless performances together, interupted by a couple of stinkers. He seems to be on an upswing right now, hurling 7 scoreless innings over his last 7 appearances.

Who will be the next man from Pawtucket to get the call?

John Smoltz: DFA'd

The Boston Red Sox have designated John Smoltz for assignment today after his poor performance against the New York Yankees last night. The 42 year old Hall of Fame candidate could never find a groove and get his rhythm this year. Junichi Tazawa has been called up from Pawtucket to replace him on the roster.

Junichi Tazawa Will Make it Official on Monday

Junichi Tazawa has contacted other teams interested in him to let them know he is rejecting their offers and going to the Red Sox. He will be holding a press conference on Monday to annouce his deal with Boston. He will most likely start the season in Portland and could take a few years to make it to the bigs. He did take a smaller financial deal to play with the Red Sox because Dice-K is on the team.

Red Sox Make a $6 Million Offer for Tazawa

The Red Sox have offered Japanese amateur free agent pitcher Junichi Tazawa a $6 million contract. From NPB Tracker:

Sanspo is reporting that Red Sox VP for international scouting Craig Shipley spent 1 hour 50 minutes negotiating with Junichi Tawaza, resulting in a $6M contract offer. No word on whether it’s a major league deal or not.
The deal could end up being a great bargain for the Red Sox if Tawaza is half the player he is hyped up to be.

Hat tip to MLB Trade Rumors.

Red Sox Continue to Look to Japan for Pitching

The ProJo Sox Blog points out that Junichi Tazawa cleared a hurdle in his bid to play in the U.S. I posted earlier about the Red Sox and Mets scouting him.

Junichi Tazawa, a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher who wants to play in the major leagues, was passed over by Japan's 12 professional teams in Thursday's amateur draft.

Tazawa, whose fastball reaches 97 mph, had asked Japanese teams not to select him so that he could pursue a career in the United States.

"I'm very relieved," Tazawa said. "I was very nervous right up until the end of the draft."
Several major league teams, including the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs, scouted Tazawa while he led Nippon Oil to the corporate league championship this season.

The Red Sox have been scouting several Japanese players over the last season and there is a good likelyhood that Okajima and Dice-K will have another countryman on the roster with them. This is also part of an overall marketing scheme by Red Sox ownership to continue to make the team marketable in Japan. If the Red Sox are seen as the team to root for in Japan, there is a good chance for increased revenue.
