Red Sox and the YES Network Plays of the Game

So, most people know I am a member of Red Sox Nation living in New York. Some days it is harder than others, but not today! 8 games in a row and a come from behind victory at that.

I usually watch all the Red Sox games on NESN through mlb.tv (highly recommend it BTW), but when it is Red Sox/Yankees games, I get stuck watching the games on the YES network. I know, feel my pain.

However, one of the great things...is when the Sox beat the Yankees...you get to watch the post game coverage on the YES network. You get to watch the YES guys wonder what went so horrible wrong. You get to watch Girardi get grilled by the press. You get to watch Jeter pretend like the Red Sox are not in his head. You get to watch Nick Swisher explain that his base running just really isn't all that bad and that poor little Jason Bay just tricked him.

Last night, here were the YES Plays of the Game:

Player of the Game:



Brad Penny. Yes, you heard me right. It wasn't CC Sabathia or anyone else wearing pinstripes. It was B Penny who was the best we have seen him yet on the mound. I'm getting to the point that I really don't want to see Penny traded, even though it is probably inevitable. We ended up seeing a pitcher duel between Brad Penny and CC Sabathia, who would have predicted that?

Defensive Play of the Game:



Rocco Baldelli making a spectacular diving catch in center field in the 8th inning. It was all kinds of awesome. A picture cannot just convey how beautiful that catch was. It reminded me why I am so happy that Rocco decided to come and join us this season. Good job there Rico Baldy!!

Overall Play of the Game:



Dustin Pedroia's 10 pitch at-bat where he worked a walk and seemed to unravel CC Sabathia. I don't think Nick Green got enough credit for the hit he got in front of Pedey's at bat, but that doesn't take away from the spectacular at-bat that Pedey had. He kept CC working and obviously frustrated him. Plus, with CC's pitch count, he basically pushed him right to the limit and then over it. It was a sure thing of beauty and to see Pedey's firey response when he got Ball Four. All kinds of awesome. I agree. That at-bat was the game changer.

The YES Network got it right and yeah, it had to hurt.

TBS v. Fox

No contest! Thank Christ Fox is not broadcasting the playoffs! Although I don't particularly care for the sound of Buck Martinez's voice, what he has to say is a helluva lot more interesting than Ken Rosenthal or Jeanie Zelasko and company. I'd still rather be watching NESN, but TBS works just fine for me, (except for the 'shotgun' commercials and that damn fanfare they play too much.)

During the post-game show, they showed the Kirk Gibson walk off HR off of Eck, who is on the TBS panel. They were discussing the origin of the 'walk-off' phrase when Eck said he used that term before that game. He called that Gibson HR a 'Walk-off Johnson'.

And whatever happened to Don Orsillo? Wasn't he supposed to be working this game?

In the wake of a great sweep of a very respectable Twins club, here is the Sox nationwide TV schedule (from redsox.com) for the remainder of July:

There's one other Red Sox game in July, the All Star Game at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, July 15th.

Hazel Mae Is Leaving NESN

NESN has announced that the SportsDesk anchor Hazel Mae will be leaving at the end of June. She did not disclose where she will be headed next but did say it was, "the right time for me to make this difficult decision to leave."

Time For Red Sox-Yankees

The Red Sox and Yankees will play for the first time in the Joe Girardi/Hank era. Even though it is only a spring training game there are some interesting story lines. Andy Pettitte will be starting for the Yankees and there may be some STER...OIDs chants from Sox fans that were able to get tickets in Tampa. Bartolo "el Gordo" Colon will start for the Sox and get to experience the rivalry for the first time. Both teams are playing most of their starters in this game. There is also the Youk/Joba incident and the Papelbon/Hank war of words in the background. Since it is on St. Patrick's Day the Sox may wear their green uniforms. The game will be shown on NESN at 1 pm.

NESN Starts Live Broadcasts on Saturday

For the first time NESN will broadcast spring training workouts live. You may get to see a few sprints, some long toss, and perhaps a fungo bat or two. Not "must see" TV but it beats watching the truck drive to Ft. Myers. Tito gave his take on the broadcasts:

"I never thought about it until I came here," Francona said. "It doesn't surprise me here. What should surprise me, and it probably really won't, is that people will watch it because they care so much. I think that's a testament to how much people care about baseball in New England."

Tina Cervasio Is Leaving NESN

NESN reporter Tina Cervasio who covered the Red Sox and travelled with the team last season will leave the network in March. Cervasio reported from the stands at Fenway and on the road for the broadcasts with Jerry Remy and Don Orsillo. She said she was leaving so she could spend more time at home with her family. No word yet on who will replace her.....maybe Hazel Mae?

More Red Sox Christmas Gifts

If you still have not found the perfect Red Sox gift you can buy the 2nd DVD released about the World Series this year. NESN started selling "Champions Again" on their website late last week. Early review say it is good and has more focus on the regular season than the Matt Damon DVD. If you want a one of a kind gift, a Danvers bakery created an edible version of Fenway Park that they are selling raffle tickets for. The proceeds will go to the Red Sox Foundation.

Dustin Pedroia: Tire Salesman

One of the worst parts of watching Red Sox games on NESN is seeing the same commercials over and over again. You know what I am talking about; how many times have you caught yourself humming the Foxwoods or 1 800 54 GIANT jingles. For the 2008 season in between Dunkin Donut and Sox Appeal commericals you are going to see Dustin Pedroia in Sullivan Tire adds. I'm sure the first few times will be entertaining but by May you are going to have seen enough to last a lifetime, but they will keep coming, just like the Lincoln Mercury of Raynham adds.
