In their second to last tune-up before it counts, the Red Sox pitchers had trouble finding the plate. Jon Lester walked 5 in 4 innings and Manny Delcarmen's wild pitch in the 6th allowed a run to score. Okajima struck out the side in the 7th and Paps pitched a scoreless eigth. Youk missed the game because he was sick but Chris Carter picked up the slack with 2 hits. The game featured an hour delay due to rain.
Red Sox lose 4-3 BOX SCORE
Derek Lowe will not be returning to the Boston Red Sox. The Mets have offered him a 3-year deal and with the Red Sox signing of Brad Penny there is very little chance they would want another middle of the road starter. The Daily News had this additional information:
Lowe recently told a friend that the Red Sox, who signed Brad Penny to a one-year deal this week, have never showed serious interest in him, and indicated that he thinks he'll wind up as a Met, telling the friend the two sides had exchanged contract proposals before Christmas.
A Met fan in today's Yankee game showed the proper technique for disposing of a foul ball from A-Rod. Watch below:
It appears the Sox are going to go for another ride on the Santana roller coaster this evening as negotiations appear to be back on. Some of the buzz is that the Red Sox were very close to a deal and could not pull the trigger, this was followed by several teams getting back in the race but the latest says the Mets have no chance and the Yankees appear to be out. Can Theo stick to his guns and still get the deal done? Get back on the ride for the last evening and day of the Winter Meetings.
If the rumor is true that the Mets, Twins, and A's are involved in negotiations for a mega deal that would explain why its been so quiet in Nashville on the Santana and Haren front. This deal would be good for Boston: it would take Santana out of the American League and keep Haren away from the Yankees. Boston would keep their young players and win the East again. Short of Santana coming to the Sox for cheap this is the best case senario.

According to the Boston Herald the Red Sox are willing to trade Jon Lester, Clay Buccholz, or Jacoby Ellsbury to the Twins for Johan Santana but they will not include 2 of those players together in any deal. The Twins need a center fielder but don't love Coco(can you blame them?) Theo may have to work some magic to get Santana without giving away the farm. The Yankees are pushing hard for Santana and have even talked to the Phillies about getting Aaron Rowand if they deal Melky Cabrera and Phill Hughes. The Mets are also getting more serious by potentially offering Jose Reyes in a Santana deal. I think Theo is right in not including two of the great young players in any deal; he can still get Dan Haren if Santana does not work out. That being said it would be great for the Sox to have Santana and it would be really bad if the Yankees get him.
