WAKEFIELD!!!
Tim Wakefield started the first game of today's twin bill, which is now in a rain delay in the bottom of the 7th inning. I cannot say enough about this man! Total class act both on and off the field for starters, but he certainly still has his best stuff on the mound! After flirting with a perfect game for 5 innings and a no-no for almost 8 last week at Oakland, he follows that with another gem today: 7 IP, 5 H's, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's. This leaves him with an ERA of 2.45!
Hopfully this performance will quiet all the Wake naysayers once and for all.
Now for bright spots on offense: 6 of the 9 starters today have at least 2 hits, with Drew and Lowell each getting 3 apiece so far. 3 hits for Lowell? That means he's raised his BA about 150 points or so in the past week, to a nice .315! Papi's bat has come to life as well with two hits today. He's raised his average a good 50 points this week. Winter question marks answered!
Nick Green is swinging a hot bat with a 2B and a HR today, but I think he may be using Lugo's old glove, as he has 2 errors today, too.
The game is in a rain delay at the moment, with another game scheduled for later today. Both the Sox and the Twins have Thursday off. The Sox will stay at home for a series with the Yankees starting on Friday. The Twins will be heading off to CLE for a series starting on Friday. Weather.com calls for showers and rain for the rest of the day in Boston, so it remains to be seen whether or not ball will resume today, or whether or not any games will be made up on Thursday.
UPDATE: The game was called after a 1:25 delay.

Red Sox Fall to Twinkies in Game 2
The Twins offense fared better than BC against Red Sox pitching, especially against Wake in the second game of the day for Boston. Wakefield gave up 3 runs (2 earned) 5 hits, 2 BB in two innings. Ouch. Masterson pitched much better giving up just 1 hit and a BB in 2 innings. Pedroia and Bailey each had 2 hits but Ellsbury went 0-3 on the night. Lester will be on the mound tomorrow as the Sox host the Bucs.

Lineups for First Two Games- Tek Out
UPDATE: Tek will play Thursday:
The Red Sox catcher is slated to play on Thursday. Red Sox manager Terry Francona explained he didn't want his captain to catch back-to-back games the first two days of the exhibition season.

Poor Yankees Update
The Yankees lost to the Twins today. (Aawwwww.) They are 3-7 in their last 10 games, and currently 8.5 games behind the Rays and 5 behind the Sox.
Hot on their heels are Toronto (2 games behind the Yanks in the loss column, 6-4 in their last 10), and Baltimore (5 games beind the yanks in the loss column.)
UPDATE: Toronto & Baltimore both win tonight.
Ray's and A's still in progress: 2-2, bottom of the 5th at Oakland.

More News On Santana
The latest has the Red Sox and Twins still talking with Ellsbury, Lowrie, Masterson and a yet to be determined 4th player in exchange for Santana. If the 4th player is not Buchholz or Lester the Sox will have pulled off a major trade without giving up too much. Jacoby will have a hard time getting Twins fans to shell out $125 for an autograph.

Where Will Coco End Up?
Now that the Santana negotiations have stalled, the Red Sox need to find a deal for Coco Crisp. Here are the teams that need a center fielder:
Twins: without getting Santana it is unlikely the Sox will deal Coco to the Twins unless he is part of a deal for Nathan.
Braves: Now that Jones is gone they need someone at CF but they don't have much to trade for.
Rangers: Missed out on Torii Hunter but still might go after Rowand or Fukudome. They have depth at catcher: a need for the the Sox .
White Sox: They have MacDougal or even Joe Crede as trade bait. Crede could be the corner infielder the Sox are looking for but could he handle a backup role? He may be too expensive (another Boras client)
It will be interesting to see how long Theo holds onto Coco and what they can get for him.
Another Night And No Santana
Boston seems to have given their best offer to Minnesota and the Twins are not going to accept it right now. Twins GM Bill Smith may feel he will not get better offers and may still accept it at a later date. Other reports have Santana staying with the Twinkies but I don't think that is Smith's plan. For the time being everything is fine for the Red Sox but almost every reporter in Nashville believes the Yankees are still after Johan. The only potential snag with the Santana deal taking so long is Coco stays on hold. The Red Sox might miss some potential trades with teams like Chicago or Texas by waiting too long. The Sox still need a backup catcher, another reliever, and a corner infielder. Boston has a solid team for '08 with 6 quality starters, Ellsbury in center and Big Papi with a fixed knee. Even without a blockbuster trade the Red Sox are still the best team in baseball. The Yankees are still in the rear view mirror but the Tigers look like they are coming up fast.

Just When I Thought I Was Out......
It appears the Sox are going to go for another ride on the Santana roller coaster this evening as negotiations appear to be back on. Some of the buzz is that the Red Sox were very close to a deal and could not pull the trigger, this was followed by several teams getting back in the race but the latest says the Mets have no chance and the Yankees appear to be out. Can Theo stick to his guns and still get the deal done? Get back on the ride for the last evening and day of the Winter Meetings.
Haren and Santana In The Same Deal?
If the rumor is true that the Mets, Twins, and A's are involved in negotiations for a mega deal that would explain why its been so quiet in Nashville on the Santana and Haren front. This deal would be good for Boston: it would take Santana out of the American League and keep Haren away from the Yankees. Boston would keep their young players and win the East again. Short of Santana coming to the Sox for cheap this is the best case senario.

The only thing new this morning is coming from the Boston Herald saying the Red Sox told Kalish's agent his name never came up in negotiations with the Twins. However, they told him that before the late negotiations started. The Herald is also reporting that the Twins may take their time on the Santana issue. As I posted earlier, no news is good news for the Sox. I would not put too much in the Herald if you look at the morning of Lowell's signing when they said no deal is coming soon. 2 hours later the news broke that he had returned to Boston. I am still in the camp that Santana is coming to Boston and soon.
Its beginning to look like that Simpson's episode with Kamp Krusty where everyone waits around for Krusty the Clown and then they all go home. Don't forget, Krusty does show up in the end as will Santana. Here's a clip to keep you entertained as you wait for more news on Santana.

Twins Clear Roster Space....Trade Coming?
The Twins sent Chris Bassak to Rochester clearing another spot on their 40 man roster. That would leave them with 2 open spots. This is usually something that happens before a trade is announced.
Baseball Prospectus is saying "the deal (between the Twins and Sox) is all but done"
UPDATE: The Globe is reporting the Angels are not in the Santana sweepstakes...this has become a one horse race...its just a matter of time before the deal is announced. Get the milk and cookies ready; Santa is about to bring the Red Sox a big present.

Ben Sheets Might Be The Fallback
With both the Twins and A's asking a high price for their #1's the Sox might look elsewhere for a starter. The Red Sox do not need a starting pitcher for the '08 season but when top tier players become available they have to take a good look. Ben Sheets has been a solid pitcher in the past for the Brew Crew but he has had his share of injuries. Papers have been reporting that Sheet will be up for negotiation in Nashville this week and Boston has already contacted Brewers GM Doug Melvin. Sheets is in the final year of his contract so the Red Sox would only take him if they can negotiate a long term deal because they will need starters next year when Schilling and Wakefield are gone. The Brewers don't need a left fielder but Coco could play left for them so he could be included in a trade. However, this could all be Theo's way of bringing down the price for Santana or Haren.

Santana Update
Most sources have Boston staying firm in their Lester, Coco, and Lowrie offer while the Yankees have added Hughes to their package. The Twins still want more from each club. The Yankees may have put a deadline on the Twins to accept their offer while Red Sox do not need to rush into a deal. It looks like the Twins have their best offer from both teams and have to make a choice which could include waiting until July to trade him. Since the A's are willing to trade Haren both teams may turn their attention away from Santana leaving teams like the Mets and Mariners in the mix. The Yankees have money and young talent to trade for Santana but they know that going after All-Star veterans does not guarantee anything. Randy Johnson, Jeff Weaver, and Javier Vasquez did not live up to the hype in New York. Maybe Hank or as Bill Simmons calls him "the Spalding Smails of his generation," knows more than George but it is doubtful after watching the A-Rod events. The winter meetings will tell if Twins rookie GM Bill Smith has overplayed his hand and at the same time brought about the wrath of Twins fans.
UPDATE: According to Buster Olney the Sox have changed their offer by substituting Ellsbury for Lester and adding pitcher Justin Masterson.

Would the Sox Trade Youkilis For Santana?
The Minneapolis Star Tribune is reporting that Kevin Youkilis' name has been discussed in the Santana negotiations. Brandon Moss was also mentioned as a potential part of the trade in the article. If this is accurate it is the first time either name has come up. Trading Youk would not sit as well with Sox fans as the idea of trading Lester and Coco.

Red Sox and Twins Are Still Negotiating
The buzz around Santana keeps coming for both the Red Sox and Yankees. Boston is in a better
position than New York to get Santana because they have a center fielder they are willing to part with. The way the negotiations are going I would expect the Red Sox to offer Coco, Buchholz and and another prospect to the Twins for Santana but there is still a possibility of sending Jacoby Ellsbury if Joe Nathan is also included in the deal. The Angels are said to be in the Santana sweepstakes but don't buy it. Santana is going to be traded to either the Red Sox or Yankees and with the winter meetings only a few days away look for it to happen sooner rather than later. You may have to add the Santana jersey to your Christmas list and put the Ellsbury jersey on Ebay.

Santana And Nathan to Sox?
We have heard the Santana buzz for over a week now but today is the first time Nathan has been in the rumor mill in a potental deal. Joe Nathan is a top notch closer and could help Boston as a setup man but he is not a necessity for them. He is also in the last year of his contract as is Santana so the Red Sox can't give up too much for them and be in a situation where they could walk at the end of the season. The price for Santana is high, but for Santana and Nathan together it would take at least 2 of the Red Sox young stars including Jacoby Ellsbury. I expect Boston to go after Santana hard but I would doubt that they have that much interest in Nathan if it makes them put Jacoby in the mix instead of Coco. The Mets and Yankees are both looking to land Santana so look for negotiations to continue for a while.
Where Will Coco Go?
When the Angel's signed Torii Hunter this week Coco Crisp's value increased. He was the second or third choice for many teams but is now at the top of their lists. Texas is taking a hard look at Coco and they have something the Red Sox need; a catcher. Gerald Laird has been offered up as trade bait to the Mets and Boston. Now that the Mets have their catcher the Twin's best chance of getting a good deal is from the Red Sox. Boston is in need of a backup catcher for Tek and even if they re-sign Mirabelli they will have no catcher for the '09 season. Laird only hit .242 this year, had some injury problems, and is 30 years old with only 5 seasons under his belt. The Twins now need a solid option at center field but their only player the Sox want is Santana. It would take more than Coco to get Santana and the Twins ace has made a counteroffer of $126 million for a 5 year deal so he may not be going anywhere. Theo has to play his cards right and get the most for Coco. If he deals now he might miss the blockbuster but if he waits teams might fill their center field needs with other options. There could be worse positions to be in but with most of the off season moves already completed by the Red Sox, the Coco deal will be scrutinized for a long time. In Theo we trust.
