He's right abt 'Tek.
They talk abt 'Tek & JD Drew, not 'Tek & Dice-K.
you are right, I guess I typed Dice-K by accident from posting about him earlier. thanks, I'll fix it
I would bet Tek becomes a manager some day, he gets the most out of the pitching staff and really knows the game.
In retrospect (always easier to be a Monday morning quarterback:), Boras was pushing for a five year deal for Tek and Theo insisted (and got) a four year deal. Negotiating an extension with Boras is tough -- for the most part he wants his players to utilize the "power" of free agency.
I remember reading a Bob Ryan article riping Tek for having Boras as an agent during those negotiations and asking for too much. Here is a quote from that article: "Sometimes the choice of agent tells you all you need to know. I have churned out a sufficient share of adoring prose on the subject of Jason Varitek, who has captivated us all with his bulldog approach to the task these past seven years. But the bulldog has chosen the ultimate pit bull to do his negotiating, and in so doing he reveals another, less attractive side of his personality.
Anyone who chooses Scott Boras as his agent is inherently into combat and bloodletting. Anyone who chooses Scott Boras as his agent is prepared to preside over a scorched earth campaign. Anyone who chooses Scott Boras as his agent is not remotely into this for "the love of the game." He is into this to maximize his earning potential to the last penny, not to win championships or perform in harmonious circumstances.
Does that change your opinion of Jason Varitek?"
I agree that Scott Boras is for Scott Boras and not the game. Perhaps he's going through a reality check after the recent Alex Rodgrieuz fiasco -- I have very little sympathy for Rodgrieuz or Boras.
In the scheme of things I'm hard pressed to criticize Tek based on his choice of representation. I just hope he is able to manage Boras better than others. What are your feelings with regard to Jacoby Ellsbury and Dice-K? As you know they are both Scott Boras clients.
I don't blame players for choosing Boras as an agent, I don't like Boras but I don't blame them. Teams take advantage of players too, look at what the Sox did to Bronson after he took a home town discount. I was not putting that quote up there because I totally agree with it, I was just showing Bob Ryan's thoughts on Tek before. The "Does that change your opinion of Jason Varitek" was part of the article written by Ryan
Oh, right - I re-read your post and noticed the quotation marks. Ryan was a bit over the top but Bronson is certainly an excellent example of the Red Sox taking advantage of the circumstances. Oddly enough I get the impression he would like to come back after his stint with Cincinnati...
I brought up Jacoby because I'm not sure what to make of his agent change and signing autographs for $100.
I was really disappointed when I read the story about Jacoby, he is from a poor area and not making the millions that his teammates are but I don't think you should ever charge for autographs. So many of Ellsbury's teammates have Boras as their agent so they most likely advised him to sign with his agency. It is one of the crappy things about baseball that we just have to accept...it is a business after all...even though I usually forget that.
