Pedroia's Family Receives Death Threats

Dustin Pedroia's comments about his home town have led a man to threaten to kill members of his family:

On Friday at about 12:29 p.m., Sgt. Health Parson said Woodland Police responded to Valley Tire Center, located at 179 W. Main St., for a threats report.

When the officer arrived, they spoke with the caller and one of the victims in the case.

It was determined that a suspect, identified as 47-year-old Woodland resident Kenneth Samuels, had telephoned the business and made specific death threats to male members of the Pedroia family.

The suspect made multiple phone calls stating that the Pedroia males would be shot and killed.

The suspect is thankfully now in jail.

What was once a small story has suddenly ballooned into a major issue for the Red Sox second baseman. When the team heads to Oakland after tomorrow's game Pedroia is sure to be confronted by the local press that will be more interested in the story.

The A-Hole who put up the banner in the picture above was not satisfied with Pedoia's explanation of the story and said the following:

"We're going to need a public apology before the banner comes down," Bachman said.

I'm sure Pedroia has nothing better to do than give a public apology to some jerkoff with a banner that says he sucks in front of his store. With guys like that in the town I can see why someone might consider it a dump.

Red Sox Hang On to End the Skid

Brad Penny did well in his Red Sox debut but it was the long ball that won the game for Boston today. Penny went 6 innings giving up 3 earned runs on 5 hits including two home runs to Mike Napoli. The Red Sox offense was fueled by the bat of Jason Bay who hit 2 home runs and drove in 3. Baldelli and Tek both had 2-hit games. Ramon Ramirez was great in relief; he only allowed 1 hit in 1 2/3 innings. Papelbon brought about a major increase in stress levels of Red Sox Nation with his performance in the 9th. He gave up a homer to Hunter and then a base hit and two walks to load the bases. With nowhere to put 'em, Paps struggled with Hendrick who fouled off 8 pitches in a row before hitting a liner to right that Baldelli had trouble snagging, but made the catch anyway.

The Good: Bay, Ramirez, Baldelli, and Tek all had good games
The Bad: Papelbon (got the save but it wasn't pretty)
The Ugly: Jed Lowrie has entrenched himself in this spot.. another 0-fer, now batting .056

Pedroia's Grand Marshal Status in Jeopardy

A few months ago Dustin Pedroia was the pride of Woodland, CA. Remember this from the Chronicle:

However, if Pedroia thinks he will skate by forever without having to ride down Main Street in the grand marshal's car, well, he better understand Mayor Davies is as tenacious as he is.

"Whenever Dustin shows up," the mayor said, "we're going to make a parade when he gets here."

I think the mayor may have changed his mind after Pedroia called Woodland a dump in an interview last week. The love for Pedroia seems to have dried up quickly according to the town's newspaper.

UPDATE: Dustin Pedroia called the Sac Bee to explain his side of the story:

"I'm totally crushed by this, devastated, because I didn't mean it that way at all," Pedroia said. "The (Boston Magazine) writer doesn't know my personality. I kid around a lot, and that's what I was doing when I was talking about Woodland.

"That town raised me. I grew up there. I rode my bike there. I played high school ball there. Loved all of it. My family and best friends are still there. I love going home. This article made me seem like a jerk, and I'm not."

"We will no longer have that feeling of pride when our 'hometown boy' hits a home run and runs the bases," Earl and Gail Balch of Woodland wrote to The Daily Democrat about Pedroia."Boston can have him," they wrote. "We don't want him anymore."

Sloooooow Start For the Sox

Maybe Jerry Remy knew what was coming when he called in sick for this one, or maybe the new hats were to blame. The Remdawg's replacements by committee on NESN did little to help Red Sox fans navigate through a rough outing by the Red Sox. Rex Hudler's brutal announcing led the Globe's Chad Finn to post this on Twitter:

I'm pretty sure Rex Hudler once had a pizza delivered while in Mr. Hand's class.

Wake got knocked around early and often giving up 6 hits and 3 earned runs in 6 innings but he did keep the team in the game. He had 4 K's in the game putting him at 1911 for his career. Be sure to enter the Wake 2000 K contest. Masterson was a disaster in relief giving up 4 hits and 3 earned runs in one inning (ERA of 13.50).

The Red Sox bats were sporadic throughout the night; Jacoby and Youk each had a pair of hits and Papi drove in a run but they had a hard time getting an extended rally going. The team is now 1-3 for the season.

The Good: Ellsbury 2-4 with 2 runs scored and 1 steal
The Bad: Masterson 3 earned runs in the 7th.
The Ugly: Lowrie 0-4 with 3 more LOB and a woeful .067 average

My First Experience With StubHub...It Finally Ends Well

I recently bit the bullet and overpaid for some Red Sox tickets on StubHub. I paid for box seats and was sent some grandstand seats. I called up their customer service and waited for 12 minutes to talk to a person. The rep told me I had to fax or scan a copy of the tickets to confirm they were the wrong ones before they could move forward. After doing that they did admit the tickets were not the ones I ordered and they emailed me a FedEx label to send the tickets back to the seller. They assured me that a representative would contact me shortly to get me equal or better seats or refund my money. A day went by without any contact. I emailed them and was given this response:

Once FedEx scans the package into their tracking system, a StubHub representative will be contacting you about alternate tickets to this event.

Thank you

Lou Tsounis
StubHub Customer Service Representative

Weekdays 5:00AM - 8:00PM (PST)
Weekends 5:00AM - 8:00PM (PST)

866-STUBHUB (866) 788-2482

The tracking showed a confirmed delivery to the seller a day ago and I still have had no contact from StubHub. I emailed the customer service rep again with no reply. I then called StubHub and was put on hold for over 20 minutes without an operator answering until my cellphone battery died. They now have my money and I have nothing, time to go through my credit card to get my cash back. I now give them this nice little bit of free publicity letting others know of their customer service so they can avoid using them at all costs.

UPDATE: After they finally sent me an email saying to call them and sitting on hold for 40 more minutes they said they would be sending me tickets similar to the ones I ordered and they would be sending me an email confirmation. No email conformation yet. I'll let you know if the tickets arrive.

UPDATE II: They say they are sending Loge seats...we'll see.

UPDATE III: I have received my tickets...better than what I paid for...don't know if it was worth the hassle but it worked out in the end.

Not the 1st time (umpire) Davidson screwed up

Umpire Bob Davidson who was calling the balls and strikes during the TBY @ BOS game yesterday has been roundly criticized by ESPN commentators Rick Sutcliffe and Dave O'Brien during the game, as well as bloggers and their readers everywhere. This is not the first time Davidson has called a bad game or a bad play.

Davidson

Last year during a game between the Mets and the Yankees in which the Mets pummeled the Yanks 11-2, (aamof, it was a game that I was watching, and enjoying, now that I think of it), home plate ump Davidson overruled the call by the third base umpire on a home run by Carlos Delgado. This botched call was more fuel for the instant replay debate, which was instituted last year for home runs only.

The Foul Pole and Randolph arguing with Davidson

The call belonged to the third base ump, but Davidson blew it, and admitted it in a post game interview in which he littered with several expletives that were deleted. Sign of a small mind? limited vocabulary? short on intelligence? poor vision?

Red Sox Fall to Rays Again

Dice-K did not look like the WBC MVP today; he gave up long balls in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings. Garza was mowing the Sox batters down until Bay's RBI triple put the first run on the board for Boston in the 6th. Lowrie killed 2 rallies in the game and is now ice cold at the plate. Another two weeks and fans will be wishing for Lugo. The Red Sox were down by two going into the 9th. Tek led off the inning with his 2nd home run of the season but the late inning rally would not be enough to catch the Rays.

The Good: Ramon Ramirez - 1 2/3 innings of no hit ball
The Bad: Pedroia 0-5
The Ugly: Lowrie 0-4 2 K's 3 LOB

Red Sox Lose 4-3 BOX SCORE

.... and your chicks are free!

One day after Sabfathia made his less than auspicious debut, the Yankees sent their former ace, Chien-Ming Wang, to the mound to try and right the ship, but to no avail. Wang was hammered, allowing 9 H's, 7 ER's, 3 BB's, and 1 HR in only 3.2 innings, leaving him with an astronomical 17.18 ERA after 1 game.

Money for nothing? Hey Steinbrenner! Got some chicks you can have for free! I can't wait for tomorrow's Daily News headline. ROTFLMAO!

From the Daily News:

The Yankees' rotation was supposed to be their strength in 2009, but Sabathia and Wang have looked more like Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy circa 2008. The two pitchers have combined to throw eight innings in the two losses, allowing 13 runs on 17 hits and eight walks without zero strikeouts.

Lester Struggles...No Big Hit in Red Sox Loss

The Red Sox winning streak has ended at one. Jon Lester looked OK until the 5th when the wheels came off. He walked Kapler to start then inning and then gave up a single. A bunt scored a run. Lester looked like he would get out of the inning until Pena hit a deep homer to center making it 5-1. The Sox had trouble getting anything going against Kazmir but loaded the bases against the Rays pen in the 8th. Balfour came in to face Lowrie with the bases juiced. Jed struck out to end the rally and the Sox then went quietly in the 9th. On a side note, Youk's errorless streak for '09 came to an end with a throwing error.

The Good: Youk. Went 3-4 in the game.
The Bad: Lester. 8 hits, 5 earned runs in the game
The Ugly: Lopez. 4 hits and 1 run in 1 inning

No Soup for You!

Canadians now have one more thing to add to their inferiority complex: no beer. Those silly Blue Jays fans can't handle their liquor:

Blue Jays fans celebrated Opening Day at the Rogers Centre by throwing trash at opposing outfielders.

And they paid for it dearly.

The Alcohol Gaming Commission of Ontario banned alcohol sales at the Jays’ second game of the series with the Tigers, a game that drew just 16,790 fans after selling out the night before. The OGCO also banned liquor sales for three more dates at the Rogers Centre this year, including a CFL game in August

Rocco Could Get His First Start Today

Rocco Baldelli may get to play his first game for the Red Sox against his former team. The Rhode Island native may face Scott Kazmir in tonight's game:

“Kazmir’s been real tough on us, and some of our lefties to boot,” the Sox’ manager said prior to Tuesday’s 5-3, season-opening win over the Rays at Fenway Park. “It seems like, especially with a couple days off and not playing, it would be a good idea to try to get him in there. Got to figure out where.”

Where is a good question, right field seems to make the most sense. Check back later for the lineup to see if he is in there.

Wake sits at 1907 career strikeouts. To enter, guess the date of Wake's 2000th K (also add the inning as a tiebreaker- if more than one person picks the same date and inning I will go with the person that responded first if there is still a tie). Place your answer in the comments below.

The winner will receive one copy of the brand new Red Sox Album from the Boston Pops. The album includes classics like Casey at the Bat and Take Me out to the Ballgame as well as Red Sox must-haves like Sweet Caroline and Shipping up to Boston.

Click on the schedule above for game dates...at this point in the season you have to just guess when he's going to pitch, one guess per person but you can change it as the season goes along with a new comment.

At Last

Bunting adorns the ballpark walls, the sod is in perfect order, and the smell of cooking hot dogs is in the air. The long wait is over; opening day has arrived. Every team enters the season with new hope and with their ace on the mound.

Even with cloudy skies at Fenway today the outlook could not be brighter for the 2009 Red Sox. The team had a successful spring with the return of Mike Lowell, the absence of "clicking" in Big Papi's wrist, and Lowrie hitting the cover off of the ball. Buchholz showed new found confidence and the team suddenly found itself with an abundance of starting pitching.

You now have 162 things to watch before we reach October. You have made it through another winter, let the games begin.
