Jerry Remy Talks About His Depression

The RemDawg spoke with the Globe last night about the depression he has been suffering from this season.:

“You didn’t want to get out of bed. The first thing you thought when you woke up was ‘another lousy day is ahead of me.’ I had no desire to do anything. I was a guy who always took pride in being there every day, whether I was sick or not. I couldn’t answer the bell that one night. I really think that’s what triggered it....I’m not embarrassed to say so, people go through it all the time. It’s probably best to tell the truth, and that’s what I did. And if it helps people, that’s good, too.’’

Remy has said that doctors have adjusted his medication and have him on the right track. He showed a great deal of courage coming forward with this information and his presence in the booth this week was a large step in his recovery. The best part of this news is that it ends speculation that Remy's cancer had gotten worse.

Beckett, Lowell and Bay Put Red Sox in the Driver's Seat

Josh Beckett earned his league leading 14th win with a great effort. He pitched 7 innings and gave up just 3 hits and 2 runs. Mike Lowell and Jason Bay continued to fuel the resurgent offense with a home run and three hits apiece. The Red Sox had an early lead and when the Tigers got on the board, the Sox responded with a 5-run inning.

Jerry Remy joined the NESN crew in the second inning and thanked fans for their support. He blamed his absence on poor health following his surgery which led to an infection. He also said he had been suffering from depression and joked that the doctor said he could not watch games on NESN becasue Don Orsillio would lead to more depression.

Red Sox Win 8-2 BOX SCORE

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E
Tigers 0 0 0 0 1 0 1 0 0 2 3 1
Red Sox 0 1 2 0 5 0 0 0 0 8 11 0

Jerry Remy Issues Statement on His Health

Here is the statement Jerry Remy has issued from his blog on Sawxheads:

In November I had a very small, low-grade cancerous area removed from my lung. I was fortunate that it was discovered at an early stage. Except for the surgery, I required no additional treatments. I left the hospital with a clean bill of health.

Unfortunately, following the surgery, I developed a bad infection further compounded by a case of pneumonia. It was the pneumonia and the infection that set me back. This all happened just as I was leaving for spring training.

In hindsight, it was a mistake to go and I am paying the price for it now. As NESN announced, I am taking a leave of absence so that I can fully recover.

First of all, I would like to thank all of you for the outpouring of concern you have given me recently. I honestly appreciate it. Secondly, I want to emphasize that I am in good shape now.

While physically I have no issues, the past few months have been emotionally draining, and exhausting for both my family and I. Along those lines, I would like to thank NESN and the Red Sox for allowing me to take as much time as I need. I am not certain exactly when I will return, but I will keep you posted. I want to make sure that when I do return I can be with the team all the way to the 2009 World Series!

I hope that by stating all this publicly it will emphasize the dangers of smoking to everyone, especially children. So, once again, I appreciate all your support and I would like to emphasize – if you don’t smoke, don’t start, and if you do smoke, try to quit! I don’t say that lightly because I know how difficult it can be.

Thanks,
Jerry

Please take a moment and wish Jerry a get well message here.

Hi everyone it's Jerry. Thx for . . . your concern. In February, I had a case of pneumonia and a bad infection followed . . .

I went off to Spring Training without ever having a chance to completely recuperate. I am paying the price now . . .

I've decided to take some time off to fully recover. Hopefully it'll be a short time. I miss doing the games! Thanks again, Jerry.

Almost forgot . . . Go Sox. Jerry.

Twitter in the Broadcast Booth

Jerry Remy has fully embraced twitter and is even using it for a nightly contest to win a t-shirts. The Red Sox radio team is also on twitter, but not all announcers are embracing this form of social media. Bob Uecker from the Brewer's booth says he twitters in the morning until he has his first Miller Lite with his Frosted Flakes. Listen below:

President Remy Speaks to the Nation

On Friday Red Sox Nation President Jerry “The RemDawg” Remy delivered a “State of the Red Sox Nation” address in true presidential form, minus the suit and power tie, outside Jerry Remy’s Sports Bar & Grill at Logan Airport. Remy told fans that it’s early in the season and to keep the faith—and guess what, the Red Sox have won every game since! Remy took questions from the crowd before fans belted out “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” for great prizes. Alan Rogers of Warner, NH won first place in the singing contest and will get the rare opportunity to sit with the RemDawg in the booth at a Red Sox home game. Paige Vigneron, a young girl from Marblehead, MA, will get to fly courtesy of JetBlue to Chicago to watch the Red Sox battle the Sox on Labor Day weekend for winning second place.

Is RemDawg's Empire Expanding or Collapsing?

The RemDawg is set to deliver The State of Red Sox Nation at his new restaurant: Jerry Remy’s Sports Bar & Grill in Terminal C of Logan Airport on Friday April 17 at noon. Remy will then take questions from fans and judge a singing contest of Take Me Out to the Ballgame with Wally.

You would think with an event like the one above that things are looking good for the RemDawg empire but if he keeps losing bets in the broadcast booth he may be in for a hard fall.

Bob Lobel and Jerry Remy Answer Questions

Sawxheads had their daily call-in from the Winter Meetings to field questions on the Red Sox. I was able to ask the RemDawg three questions about Burnett, Lowe, and Buchholz. Remy disagreed with me that the club was overvaluing Buchholz; he thinks it is the fans that have wanted too much too fast. Listen Below:

UPDATE: Theo spoke with reporters about the team's view of Buchholz today:

"In our minds, he's a top-of-the-rotation starter who we control [contractually] for six years," said Epstein. "He's very high-priced, and we value him tremendously."

Time to Tase the Cowbells

Extra Bases notes that when the Sox are down 2-3 in a series they have always won Game 6. Here are the years when that has happened: 1903, 1967, 1975, 1986, 2003, 2004, 2007.

The cowbells will be out in full force since they have added over 5,000 seats for tonight's game and with those new seats come more tasers. The cowbells can quickly be silenced if Josh Beckett returns to his traditional October form, but I'm not so sure about the tasers.

The RemDawg breaks down Game 6. Watch Below:
