The 6 Man Rotation Revisited

Before the start of the season there was a great deal of talk about a 6 man rotation, but that ended once Curt Schilling's injury was announced. Yesterday Bartolo Colon announced he would move his opt out clause to June 1st leaving the Red Sox with a tough decision. If Colon pitches well with Pawtucket the Red Sox are going to have to bring him up and give him a few starts to see what they have. In early April it looked like Colon would be needed to replace Buchholz or Lester, but with both of them pitching well recently a replacement is no longer necessary. Boston does not have the option of keeping Colon in Pawtucket if he is pitching well because he could opt out of his contract and sign with another team. The Red Sox might go with a 6 man rotation that includes Beckett, Dice-K, Lester, Wake, Buchholz, and Colon, assuming no injuries and continued good pitching from the youngsters. The bullpen has been the weak point of the team this season but none of these pitchers seems like a good solution for help in that area. A 6 man rotation will give the pitchers extra rest and keep the arms fresh for the second half....now what do you do when Schilling comes back?

When Schilling comes back?
A Coco/Colon package could bring in some attractive offers for trade! We'll see what's needed come trade deadline, but for now the 6 man rotation sounds good to me.

Some talk on WEEI today regarding a possible six man rotation but there was not much enthusiasm from the armchair "experts". I think Dave's trade proposal is very intersting and probably more attractive than just a straight Coco deal.

Who would we trade Coco and or Colon for??

It's clear that a proven reliever would help, but I don't think there are too many of those guys othe there... at least not anyone better than what we have.

Bottom Line: If they can't keep him here, they better at least get something for him.

Can the trade idea. Having 6 or 7 quality starters is a good problem to have - you don't trade those away.

6 man rotation is an interesting topic. I personally doubt they'd do that, partly because it reduces the number of arms in the bullpen, but also but it messes with guys who are strong on 4 days, and reduces the number of starts Beckett gets, unless you do some awkward shuffling every week.

I think it just has a way of working itself out. Someone will get hurt, or be struggling, and the slot will be obvious when the time comes. Buchholz and Lester probably have options, and Wake has spent time in the bullpen before. Too early to call, but I doubt a trade is the way to go - at least not until much later in the season.
