David Aardsma Becomes Victim of Multiple Signings

The Red Sox have designated David Aardsma for assignment to make room for Takashi Saito. Aardsma was a surprise standout in the bullpen for some of last season so he will be missed if any of the new guys fail to live up to their expectations.

Injury Update

David Aardsma- He played in a game in Pawtucket yesterday, getting 3 quick outs on 14 pitches. Look for him to rejoin the big club by the end of the week.

Bartolo Colon- He will pitch in his first rehab game with the PawSox on Tuesday for 2 innings and continue to build up arm strength. The Sox are taking his rehab very slow to make sure he is ready. Look for a late August return.

Julio Lugo- He jogged in the outfield for the second straight day and is ahead of schedule for return. He was originally thought to be coming back in late August but could now be just over a week away. With Lowrie playing so well at short it will be a tough move for Tito to bring the much maligned Lugo back.

Something big is going to happen

I can just feel it. Can you feel it? With Aardsma going on the DL, and the rest of the middle relief guys having rollercoaster seasons, I have this feeling that Theo is going to do something big and unexpected. There are only 10 days left before the trade deadline, and let's face it, Hansen, Delcarmen, Okajima, Timlin, and Lopez are not having the seasons they had last year. They've been surprisingly sub-par for most of the season. They've had their good moments, no doubt, but as a whole, they've been disappointing.

Theo is up to something, I just know it.

Aardsma Might Be Headed to DL, Masterson Could Get the Call

The ProJo is reporting that David Aardsma has a leg injury and may be going on the DL. This could happen as early as today opening the door for Justin Masterson to rejoin the team as a reliever. This means the Sox really need Buchholz to do well as a starter because there is no real replacement if he cannot be effective. Boston would have to scrap their plans to have Masterson in the pen or wait the few weeks for Colon to return.

Sox Use Long Ball to Beat the O's....Ortiz Hurt

Pedroia and Ortiz hit back to back home runs in the third and Manny hit #500 later in the game. Lester pitched well enough to keep the Sox in the game and get it to the bullpen. The pen was spectacular last night. Aardsma has become the everyday option for Tito and he went 2 perfect innings. Oki and Paps pitched the 8th and 9th each giving up a hit but no runs. David Ortiz was hurt on a swing in the 9th. He was pulled from the game and underwent X-Rays at the ballpark (negative) He is not expected to be in today's lineup.

Sox Win 6-3 BOX SCORE

Watch the celebration of Manny's historic home run. Make sure you wait for the drunk guy to do a somersault on the dugout.

Trade Rumor Mill

Jason Stark of ESPN is reporting that the Brewers have shown some interest in Tavarez. He also reports that the Sox have been discussing dealing Aardsma and Javier Lopez as well. Boston has to free up some roster space if they want to bring Colon up and keep Buchholz on the team when he returns from the DL. The bullpen has not been great this season so they may want get some new blood or some pitching prospects for the future. It seems that Theo has been charging a high price for Sox players so I would not expect to see teams lining up to make offers but as the injuries pile up around the league the offers may start to trickle in.

Game 5 Recap 4/4 at Toronto

Pitching: Wakefield pitched well for most of the game only giving up 3 hits until the 6th inning. Jays batters seemed to adjust to the knuckler late in the game and managed a 3 run rally. Tito stuck with Wake and it payed off with a double play ball. The Sox bullpen was not good. They quickly gave the lead back to the Jays in the 7th and let them add another run in the 8th. Aardsma was charged with the loss and he may be sent down when Beckett is activated on Sunday. Corey faced one batter and struck him out.

Offense: Cash had the only hit for the Red Sox until Lowell hit a Texas leaguer in the 7th. J.D. Drew hit a 3 run home run to tie up the game on a two strike count. Manny had the final hit (single) for the Sox in the 9th in a bad offensive night for the team. Marcum held the Sox to 3 hits in 7 innings and the pen just gave up one more.

Game Notes: Red Sox lost 6-3. Ellsbury started in center but Francona had Crisp pinch hit for him late. Blue Jays fans were given annoying white towels before the game. Roberto Alomar was honored by the Jays in a pre-game ceremony. Box score here.

Breakdown of Game 2 vs Oakland

Pitching: Jon Lester had a good first inning before he ran into trouble in the second. He once again had control problems that would lead to a run. He had 3 walks and 4 earned runs in just 4 innings and gave up a home run. A typical start for Lester of late; good stuff at times but erratic. The pen looked pretty good, especially Aardsma who struck out 3 in 1.2 innings of work. Lopez and Delcarmen also pitched well before Corey entered the game and gave up another run.

Offense: Harden was pitching very well and it was tough for the Sox to get much going. Manny had the only RBI with a solo shot. Big Papi is still hitless in '08 but his swings did not look bad; his timing is slightly off but not a big concern. Tek looked lost at the plate going 0-4 with 3 K's, he wasn't even close on most swings, this may take a while to come around. Sean Casey's first at bat as a Red Sox: GIDP. Pedroia was 0-4 in the lead-off spot. Not much positive here.

Game Notes: Red Sox retreads Keith Foulke and Alan Embree both pitched well for Oakland in the 8th and 9th giving up just one hit.

Dispute Over...Sox Win

The Red Sox won their dispute with MLB and according to Curt Schilling they got what they wanted. The trip to Japan is on as well as today's game.

Dice-K did not make the start today because of the delay, David Aardsma is the starter against the Jays. Both Coco and Ellsbury are in the game, Jacoby is in left, but Pedroia is in the lead-off spot.

Red Sox Trade Pitchers with White Sox

The Red Sox traded pitchers Willy Mota and Miguel Socolovich to the White Sox for pitcher David Aardsma. Last year Aadsma pitched in 25 games with an ERA of 6.40. He was a great prospect that did not work out in Chicago but is still only 26 years old. The addition brings the Sox up to 39 on the 40 man roster. Much like Miceli and Kolb, Aardsma will come to spring training looking for a permanent spot in the pen. He is another roll of the dice for Boston but if any of the 3 recent signings work out it will be all they need to have a solid bullpen in '08.
