Jeff Bailey Gets Sent Down

The roster is just about set with Rocco Baldelli, Nick Green, Chris Carter and George Kottaras making the team. Penny will round out the rotation with Buchholz heading to the PawSox. Jeff Bailey was beat out by Chris Carter after a close race all spring and sent down to minor league camp.

Sox Win, but what up with BJ's and O's?

The Sox jumped all over Fausto Carmona for 4 runs in the 1st inning tonight. Carmona was so awful that he didn’t even get sent out for the 2nd inning after having thrown 51 pitches in that one inning. 51 pitches in one inning! I remember Wake throwing less pitches in 5 (five) innings! He’s no Beckett or Lester, but the well-seasoned Byrd can give you 6 innings and keep you in the game without his cage getting rattled. It was looking like the Sox were going to fly away with this one after the 1st inning, but the Tribe chipped away at the 4 run cushion the Sox gave him, tying it 4-4 in the 5th inning. No longer in line for the win, Byrd had his feathers plucked, and Timlin came in the 6th inning. Timlin?! Yikes! Hoping for an ‘on-again’ performance (Y’know how he’s been on-again, off-again? Please don't be a turkey today!), we watched him go 1.1 innings, 1 hit, 1 K, 1 BB. Aardsma, similar numbers. Bottom of the 8th, Bailey triples, Kotsay doubles, 5-4 Sox up. Manny pitches in the 9th and garners his save #2 of the season with 1 BB and 2 K’s.

Meanwhile in Toronto and Baltimore….

Yankees and Blue Jay’s were tied at 2-2 going into the 10th when the yanks erupted for 4 runs. Sheesh Toronto! Give the Sox headaches and then go belly up on the yanks! WTFiuwTHAT?!
In Baltimore, the O’s went up 5-0 over the Ray’s by the 2nd inning. It is now 7-6 Ray’s in the 8th.

Sox win, 5-4 BOX SCORE

Jeff Bailey Up, Pauley Back Down

Jeff Bailey was called up from the PawSox tonight to give the Sox a backup for Youk and Casey. If Youk needs a break Lowrie can play third and Cora can go to short, if Casey needs a break Bailey can come in at first. Bailey is also a good bat to have on the bench for pinch hit situations late in the game (like when Tek comes up.)

David Pauley was called up in case the Sox needed some relief help tonight after the long outings for most of the pen last night. Since he was sent down today that leaves Buchholz in the rotation. I think Theo and Tito were hoping that Zink could stay longer and take a spot in the rotation with Byrd, but after last night they have decided to stick with Buchholz (this guy has had more chances than Steve Howe.) Who knows what will happen if Clay has another train wreck on the mound, which at this point seems likely.

Is Masterson Going to Save the Pen?

Justin Masterson is returning to Pawtucket to become a reliever for the Red Sox. This could be a sign that the price for the mediocre relievers that will be available before the deadline are not worth the asking price and Theo is going to try to get it done in house. Masterson has shown he can get big league hitters out so it will be a great move if he can effectively make the transition.

In other Sox news, Jeff Bailey was called back up, this is the second time the power hitting first baseman has been with Boston this season.

Bailey Called Up....Dice-K to DL?

Jeff Bailey has been asked to join the Red Sox in Baltimore for the series that begins tonight. This move signals that Dice-K will likely be heading to the 15-Day DL today but the results of his MRI have yet to be made public. Bailey can play first or outfield but he will most likely be used as a pinch hitter in the upcoming series. He has been very hot for the PawSox lately hitting 13 home runs in May including 2 yesterday.
