Is Masterson Going to Save the Pen?

Justin Masterson is returning to Pawtucket to become a reliever for the Red Sox. This could be a sign that the price for the mediocre relievers that will be available before the deadline are not worth the asking price and Theo is going to try to get it done in house. Masterson has shown he can get big league hitters out so it will be a great move if he can effectively make the transition.

In other Sox news, Jeff Bailey was called back up, this is the second time the power hitting first baseman has been with Boston this season.

This may be a great idea. They currently have (not counting Masterson) 6 viable starters (once Colon is back), and if everyone is healthy, they won't be able to get much use out of Masterson.

This could give him an opportunity to be part of the team THIS year for a longer period.

We'll have to see how he does out of the pen. He has had much more success against righties. He could come in to face right handed batters like Lopez and Okajima will tend to come in to face lefties (when possible).

Could be a great move, but there's also no opening in the pen right now.

I see plenty of openings...Hansen, Delcarmen, Lopez, Okajima, Timlin....
In reality I think once Masterson proves he can be a reliever with the PawSox, Oki is going to get a "new" injury forcing him to go on the DL.
