Tek's Curtain Call

I would put chances of Tek coming back next year at less than 50%. Theo and the Red Sox ownership have shown they are not willing to pay for players past their prime. For Tek to return to Boston he would have to be willing to take far less than he would recieve on the open market, something like a two year deal at $7 mil per. After Posada set the tone for catchers last offseason, Boras will be looking for a big payday. Tek has been a huge part of the sucess of the Red Sox throughout his time in Boston and still has something to offer the team. I am hopeful this will not be his last season but we need to be prepared if it is not. The fans at Fenway need to honor him in his last few games for all he has done for the team. Even if he goes elsewhere next season, I believe he will be back as the Red Sox manager sometime in the future.

And right after Bora$ got that ridiculous deal for Posada (which only King George would have paid), he went out and had a miserable injury wracked season, thus rendering null & void any contract benchmark status rendered to it. Posada has proven that aging stars are now under intense scrutiny healthwise, and are most likely no longer getting outlandish contracts that only Steinbrenner would pay in the first place.

I can almost hear 'Tek telling Bora$, "Do what you have to, to keep me in Boston."

I really hope he doesn't go elsewhere to finish his career... Varitek strikes me as the type of guy who WILL take less pay and a more limited role to stay with the team. He will still be invaluable in the clubhouse, doing game preparation and mentoring the new catchers that come up. Varitek should remain the captain until he's ready to be a coach! ^_^
