Bay Wants To Explore the F.A. Market

News broke yesterday that talks between the Red Sox and Jason Bay have been halted for the time being. Rob Bradford sheds some light at what caused this at WEEI.com:

“I don’t think anybody in my situation wants to play for six years and then you earn the right to be a free agent and on some levels sell yourself short, and that doesn’t mean there doesn’t have to be some concessions,” Bay said. “But you put yourself in this position and I think it’s in my best interest to kind of explore. Not to say we’re ever going to go that far, but I definitely want to make sure it’s the right fit.

Theo does not want to rush into a long term deal with Bay until the current market for outfielders has more clarity. Look at the money Manny got vs what he expected.

Theo is smart to see what the market (and Bay) do in 20090... but Bay and Holliday are the only two exciting FAs in the 2010 group... Bay and his agent are smart to wait and see what they can get.

Bottom Line: Jason has every right to want to test the market, but in the end the Sox will need a LF and they have more $$ than most to give him the deal he wants...

Let the Yankees get into a bidding war with the rest of league for Holliday - that way the Sox can focus on Bay, who I think will be just as good going forward.
