Sox and Charity: The August Edition!

Hi All! It's time for another charity update. As I have stated in previous months, I committed to donating $10 to charity for every Red Sox win in 2009. After the All Star Break...the Red Sox seemed to hate charity since they seemed hell bent against racking up wins. However, they seem to be a fan of the charity once again!

For the month of August, the Red Sox won 15 games, so that mean $150 going to charity. This month, the money was donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The money is spent to fund research in hopes of finding a cure to Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes.

I participate in our local walk each and every year, so this month was an easy one to pick the charity. Diabetes is a disease that pulls at my heart strings. My mom unfortunately passed away in 2007 from diabetes related complications. It's one of those diseases that can be managed, but if it is not....it can lead to countless problems. I have such hopes that there will be a cure for the disease in my lifetime so that people do not need to suffer like my mom did.

I used to walk for my mom when she was with us...and since she has passed away, I have walked in her honor. If you happen to have a few extra dollars lying around and want to donate, feel free to donate to my walk page. The walk has come and gone, but they accept donations for about another month.

Now let's review the charities we have given money in 2009.

April $140.00 Donated to MalariaNoMore.Org
May $150.00 Donated to Bob Woodruff Foundation
June/July $310.00 Donated to The Jimmy Fund
August $150.00 Donated to JDRF

for a total of $750.00 being donated in 2009. And in September, we have won 10 games...and I hope we finish all kinds of STRONG! And let's not forget OCTOBER!

Let's Go Red Sox! Not only do walk off wins like last night bring us all kinds of warm fuzzy happiness, but they also help our some really amazing charities.

Jimmy Fund 2009: Give To A Great Cause!

It's that time again....for the annual Jimmy Fund Telethon! It's one of the many things I LOVE about the Red Sox. They are sometimes all about kicking arse and winning baseball games, but sometimes they are about so much more. A lot of ballclubs support charities, but The Red Sox do it bigger and better. They support the 2 day telethon in hopes of kicking cancer's arse...and helping those battling it. I think it is just awesome.

Jimmy Fund

"The Boston Red Sox, WEEI Sports Radio 850 AM, NESN, and the Jimmy Fund are once again teaming up for the 8th annual WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon at Fenway Park. Call in your gift to benefit the lifesaving mission of the Jimmy Fund at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute."

The 2 day telethon is today and tomorrow. I know money is tight for everyone (especially me who just shelled out money for 3 Red Sox/Yankees games), but we all have a little change lying around, so if you can...please donate it to the Jimmy Fund. The Fund helps support the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Any organization that helps kids fighting cancer....is something I will always support.

As you all know, I donate $10 for every Red Sox win to charity so that my obsession with baseball is not so selfish. I couldn't decide on who I wanted to donate to for June or July...and once I remembered the Jimmy Fund was coming up, I decided to wait and donate to them.

So, for the wins in June and July...which were 31...I donated all of those funds to the Jimmy Fund.

That's a whoppin' $310.00.

I couldn't be happier to see that money go to such a good cause.

If you would like to donate...and I hope you do, either visit The Jimmy Fund or call (877) 738-1234.

The telethon goes until midnight tomorrow....so let's log on and pick up the phone....and help them get to their 5 MILLION DOLLAR GOAL.

If you donated to the Jimmy Fund, leave a note in the comments section. Every dollar and cent counts...and is for a great cause!

Sox and charities: The May edition

I'm late in reporting this, but late is better than never, eh?

I posted last month that I committed to donating $10 for every Sox win this season to charity. The Sox won 14 games in April and therefore $140 was donated to the Malaria No More foundation.

Yes, I know June is almost over...but I never reported about the donations for the May Sox wins. Since Memorial Day was in the month of May, I wanted to make the donation that in some way honored the troops. There are so many organizations out there that do wonderful things for the men and women in service...but I was able to narrow it down to one.

I was watching ABC and Bob Woodruff was reporting about the conditions of many of the troops who come home from war. If people don't remember Bob Woodruff, he is an ABC correspondent who suffered a serious brain injury while reporting on the Iraq war. Woodruff quickly learned that he was not alone when it came to recovering from war injuries and made it his continued drive to bring this issue to light. I have nothing but respect and admiration for Bob Woodruff, his strength and how he chose to use his experiences to help other people. A lot of people know about the struggles of soldiers who come back from war with physical injuries, but Woodruff has made a dedicated effort to inform the public about those soldiers who have suffered those "hidden injuries" such as traumatic brain injuries and psychological issues.

So, I decided to make my May donation to the Bob Woodruff Foundation. Here is just a snippet about the foundation:

The mission of the Bob Woodruff Foundation is to provide resources and support to injured service members, veterans and their families -- building a movement to empower communities nationwide to take action to successfully reintegrate our nation’s injured heroes—especially those who have sustained the Hidden Injuries of War—back into their communities so they may thrive physically, psychologically, socially and economically.

2.2 million Americans have volunteered to serve our nation in uniform.

More than 35,000 service members have been physically wounded.

It is estimated that more than 320,000 have sustained traumatic brain injuries.

More than 300,000 have psychological wounds.

The Sox won 15 games in May, so that means that $150 was donated to the Bob Woodruff Foundation. If you feel inclined, please feel free to donate to the cause. I know that any amount can truly help the cause of helping soldiers who have come back from war with issues and injuries...and in many ways have been forgotten by our communities.

It's almost the end of June and as of right now, the Sox have won 13 games in June and have 8 games left. I am hoping that the June donation will be the biggest donation yet. I'll be rooting for the Sox for each and every win...not only for the Sox, but for charity. Who can root against charity?

Supporting My Sox and My Favorite Charities

Remember back in April when the Sox started off with 2-6 record and it didn't seem like we could do anything to win a game? It does seem like forever ago since we then went on a tear and won a dozen games straight. Well, at that point...I decided to try to give our wins an extra bump of karma. It couldn't hurt, eh?

You see, for me baseball and my obsession with it if often a selfish endeavor. I sometimes prioritize baseball over those actual people in my life. I prioritize baseball over sleep. I am sure there are times baseball has made me not the best employee I could be.

So, I wanted to make my appreciation of all things Red Sox a little less selfish while adding some karma to a team that was struggling out of the gate. I decided I was going to donate $10.00 to charity for every Red Sox win. Originally, I thought I might pick one charity for the whole year, but I am going to mix it up. Each month a new charity gets my love and dollars.

For the month of April, the charity I donated to was MalariaNoMore.Org In April, the Sox won 14 games so I donated $140.00 to their charity. With every $10 donated, they can provide one malaria net to a much needed area in Africa. Here is just a snippet from their site about what they do and why it is important:

Every 30 seconds a child in Africa dies from malaria. We know how to stop this tragedy, but we need your help.

A $10 mosquito net can protect a child and its family as they sleep, the time when most malaria-spreading bites occur.

The tragedy of malaria can be transformed into our generation's greatest triumph—the ending of malaria deaths—with a simple act of compassion.

Make your mark on the fight against malaria with a gift that supports Malaria No More's live-saving programs, including such as our efforts to distribute mosquito nets where they are most needed.

Check out their site and if you have any extra you can spare, please donate.

May is coming to a close. So far, we have 11 wins...so let's smash these Mets and Twins and Jays and make more $$$ for charity. I haven't narrowed down the charity just yet, but no matter what...it'll be for a good cause.

Red Sox Players Continue to Give

I doubt there is a team in baseball that has more players who donate time and money than the Boston Red Sox. This is well know with the Jimmy Fund during the regular season but the team giving does not end with the baseball season. I posted earlier about Julio Lugo and David Ortiz helping victims of flooding in the Dominican Republic. This week Doug Mirabelli organized a coat drive for charities in Michigan and Boston. Julian Tavarez, Kyle Snyder, Brandon Moss and Bryan Corey spent today visiting hospitals with the World Series Trophy. It is nice to see players who don't even know if they will be with the Red Sox next year helping out the Boston community.
