2008 Election

I know this is a Red Sox site and people sometimes don't want to be bothered by politics but I hope you will take the time to vote for Obama on Nov. 4. I respect that there are Republican Red Sox fans out there and some of them thankfully visit this site. I met John McCain in 2006 and he was a very nice guy but I just disagree with him on the future of our country on several issues. The election will not be close in California but it will be in other states so please make your vote count wherever you are. You have the power to put the country in a new direction so please do your part and vote for Obama.

Teixeira Still on the Radar

Ken Davidoff of Newsday thinks the Sox will go after Teixeira hard.

With David Ortiz experiencing his least productive season as a Red Sox player after dealing with a wrist injury, the Sox want to import a high-impact offensive force. Given that they're probably not interested in bringing back Manny, Teixeira is the guy.
Picking him up would give Boston some insurance if Lowell takes longer than expected in returning.

My Turn at Armchair GM

Rest assured that Theo will be analyzing EVERY position player and EVERY pitcher with a fine tooth comb in regards to value to the team, as well as trade value.

WAKEFIELD & CASH~ Signing Wake for $4m gives the Sox a proven 5th or even 4th man in the rotation, while at the same time frees up umpteen bazillions for other needs. While Cash is no Papi at the plate, he does have adequate skills behind the dish. The experience he gains as Wake’s personal catcher will only serve to increase his trade value come the day Wake does retire. And if Charlie Zink stays hot in Pawtucket and shows up north, then the Sox in Beantown have a catcher who can handle the knuckleball.

LOWELL/TEXEIRA/PAPI/YOUK~ It’s tough to write about the players in this infield logjam separately as they are all so closely related in the evaluation of potential improvements.

Mike Lowell took a discount to stay in Boston when he could have easily left for more money elsewhere. He is the type of player you want in your clubhouse, in your line-up, and on your field. He’s another proven veteran. While he suffered some injuries in 2008, there is no reason to believe that he will not rebound after his surgery and have another good year. While he may not have a career year, expect him to earn every penny of his contract. He cares about the team, is well liked by teammates and fans alike, and gives everything he’s got. If Theo jettisons Lowell for Texeira, it will set a bad precedent. Exceptional players down the road would be less likely to sign with the Sox knowing that a heartless SOB GM will trade them anyhow. Texeira’s bat would of course be most welcomed in the line-up behind Papi, but at what cost? The bazillions he will most likely command? The ill will that could be fostered by trading quite capable and admirable players who happen to be over 32 years old?

Lowell being the professional that he is, I expect him to recuperate nicely and rehab himself into season ready condition come February. I expect Papi to rebound as well. While I don’t expect he’ll hit 54 HR’s again, a winter of rest for his wrist and knees will ready him for whacking 30-35 taters in 2009. While Youk is not Manny, he’s shown he is not to be taken lightly at the plate. Their Gold Glove work at 1B and 3B take away runs from other teams.

VARITEK~ I say keep him. Who would be his heir? Much has been made of his decline at the plate this year, but let’s not forget that as late as the end of May this past season, he was still hitting at a .295 average. It’s quite possible personal issues took its toll on his offense, and it’s quite possible he could rebound to hit .250 or better. His game calling skills make up for a BA less than stellar. Now when Boras demands an outrageous amount of money for the Captain (that would be anything more than $16m/2 years), then all bets are off. I hope ‘Tek realizes the monetary value and historical value to the game in his staying with Boston for the remainder of his career. Let’s not forget the deal Posada got and the year he had this past season at his age. Boras! Are you listening?

CORA~ I think it was Sparky Anderson who said he didn’t want guys on his bench who were happy to be role players. I disagree. There are guys out there who give 100% in that capacity, and Cora is one of them. He plays 3 positions well, hits .275, is a smart player, and is a bargain, taboot. I say keep him. Besides, he likes it in Boston.

CASEY & KOTSAY~ Who wouldn’t want Casey on his team? His clubhouse presence is a huge asset, he hits for average, and is quite adequate at first base. He could be a starter on many other teams, and may well pursue that route via free agency. He would be missed should he decide to find a full time job, but not irreplaceable. Much of the same could be said for Kotsay. He has proven his talent in the outfield and at first base and would make a fine candidate for a bench player, but I expect he will look for full time playing as well. Lars Anderson may not quite be ready for the big leagues this season (I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him in a couple of spots along the way, though), but Theo will find a quality back-up player should Casey and Kotsay both bolt.

BAY/DREW/ELLSBURY/CRISP~ As it turned out, this 4 man outfield seemed to work well in 2008. Jason Bay is not the HR machine Manny is, but his defense and professionalism added to his above average offensive skills make up for the loss of HR’s that Manny would produce. And we know Bay will be there every day.

Three outfield starts per game times 162 games divided by 4 outfielders gives each an average of over 120 starts. Injuries and slumps happen, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Theo keep all 4, and then dangle Crisp next July, unless he’s needed to secure the elusive stud pitcher they should seek to offset the loss of Manny’s run production.

LOWRIE/LUGO~ Theo will find a way to unload Lugo, whether he has to eat some of his contract or not. Lowrie will be the starting SS, who can also spell 3B and 2B if needed. We now know the reason for Lowrie’s drop-off in the 2nd half, expect another rebound.

My projected starting day line-up:

CF- Ellsbury (L)
2B- Pedroia (R)
DH- Ortiz (L)
1B- Youkilis (R)
RF- Drew (L)
3B- Lowell (R)
LF- Bay (R)
C - Varitek (S)*
SS- Lowrie (S)

SP- Lester (L)

This is an elite defensive line-up. If they hit to the best of their abilities, offense will be no problem.
*If Boras doesn’t break the bank.

STARTING PITCHING
Lester, Dice-K, Beckett, Wakefield make up 4 of the 5 starters. Rather than stir up shit in the infield by adding Texeira, which looks good as it is, find that last stud pitcher. Lowe? (How many elbow curls is he up to these days?) Sabathia (Too fat?) Peavey? (How much?) Byrd? (Good, but not that good.) Another Japanese hurler? Theo will find the right one. And once the injuries start up, you’ve got Bowden, Bucholz, Pauley, Zink, and Hansack waiting down in Pawtucket. Many have recently discounted the notion, but Schilling as a mid-season pick-up if necessary is not all that bad of an idea, if he’s well and not retired.

RELIEF PITCHING
What team doesn’t need help in this department? Papelbon, Masterson (who could also start), Okajima, Delcarmen, and Lopez look to return. Timlin should retire. Aardsma? His performance fell after returning from the DL, he could be gone. Theo needs to find two good arms for the ‘pen.

Except for Baltimore, expect another dog-fight in the AL East again. My heart says Boston wins, but what do I know? I'm only playing armchair GM.

Hank Likes Manny, Manny Likes Money

Could it be a match made in heaven? Dumbass Hank told the AP:

“And personally, I like Manny. He’s one of the greatest hitters in the history of the game. He’s a free spirit for sure, but he knows how to win."

Manny said the following about becoming a free agent:

“I want to see who is the highest bidder, gas is up and so am I.”

Ramirez is the Yankees for the taking if they want to spend the cash. It will be interesting to see if Manny goes to New York after saying he wanted to get out of the spotlight in Boston. The New York media is not going to be much different but we all know it was all about the cash anyway.

Tek, Cora, and Ross File For Free Agency

The clock is now ticking on some Red Sox players. The Red Sox now have 15 days to negotiate exclusively with their captain before he can go on the open market and see what others have to offer. Don't expect much in those days, Boras will want at least 1 other team to make a run a Varitek to make his negotiations have some more bite. The Red Sox will most likely want to get the deal resovolved before the winter meetings.

Red Sox Continue to Look to Japan for Pitching

The ProJo Sox Blog points out that Junichi Tazawa cleared a hurdle in his bid to play in the U.S. I posted earlier about the Red Sox and Mets scouting him.

Junichi Tazawa, a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher who wants to play in the major leagues, was passed over by Japan's 12 professional teams in Thursday's amateur draft.

Tazawa, whose fastball reaches 97 mph, had asked Japanese teams not to select him so that he could pursue a career in the United States.

"I'm very relieved," Tazawa said. "I was very nervous right up until the end of the draft."
Several major league teams, including the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs, scouted Tazawa while he led Nippon Oil to the corporate league championship this season.

The Red Sox have been scouting several Japanese players over the last season and there is a good likelyhood that Okajima and Dice-K will have another countryman on the roster with them. This is also part of an overall marketing scheme by Red Sox ownership to continue to make the team marketable in Japan. If the Red Sox are seen as the team to root for in Japan, there is a good chance for increased revenue.

Red Sox Hot Stove Update

Jon Heyman at SI has a few updates on the Red Sox in his column. He believes Coco will be on the trading block, most likely for a catcher after the Sox sign Tek to a 2 year deal. He also thinks Lowell will stay because of teams being afraid to take him without knowing how he will respond to the hip surgery. Heyman thinks the Yanks will end up getting Sabathia.

The hot stove is very similar to last season for the Red Sox, just substitue Santana with Sabathia.

This Bud's For You

Bud Selig f'd up the World Series by letting them play last night, and now he has postponed tonight's game and not told them what they are doing with the travel day. Fans had to sit in miserable conditions because Selig has no respect for the game, all he cares about is TV $. Here's more from philly.com:

The game never should have been permitted to start, and everybody with access to weather radar - read, everybody - knew that. This big green blob was coming north and it wasn't stopping. That commissioner Bud Selig said that three different weather services gave him optimistic reports has made him and his sport look silly.

There are 45,000 wet, exhausted, frustrated people who sat outside in this mess and knew that it was a farce. They came in the hope of glory. What they got was abused. This should not have started - should not.

Lockdown!

Fenway is closed for the season, except for the pricey rentals of the EMC Club. Nothing signals the coming winter like the end or baseball season at Fenway. Crews removed the sod and cleaned the concessions for the offseaons. We use the term "cleaned" losely as the mice and rats still should be able to find some snacks before moving on until opening day. It is still hard to think that baseball is over for the season, especially since it has been very warm for the last few weeks in Northern California, today it was in the 80's.

Report Card - Starting Pitchers

2008 Report Card for the Red Sox Starting Pitchers

Dice-K B Pitched well on the road, got the W's but high pitch counts and walks put pressure on the bullpen.

Jon Lester A- Almost untouchable at Fenway and very good on the road, he was the best starter this season.

Josh Beckett B- Multiple strange injuries throughout the season took thier toll, not the ace he was last year.

Tim Wakefield B- Carried the team while injuries were rampant but still had his rough patches.

Clay Buchholz D Never could get right, 2 good starts do not make up for the multiple disastrous ones.

Bartolo Colon C- Had a few good starts when the team needed them but he seemed to be always on the mend.

Justin Masterson B Showed some great potential as a starter, we'll see what the future holds.

Paul Byrd B+ Great pickup by Theo, he did exactly what he was supposed to do.

Curt Schilling F $8 million for a one-hopper to the plate.

Rays Fans: Now Everybody Hates Them

I don't think you can find many Red Sox fans that will have many positive things to say about the fans of the Tampa Bay Rays. This should not surprise you, it was the case before the teams met in the ALCS. Rays fans are now starting to annoy people throughout the country. Take this from SI's Inside Baseball:

"With the Rays still needing five outs to preserve their 4-0 lead and tie the World Series at one game apiece, a curious sound arose from the sold out Tropicana Field's grandstands: the unmistakable chorus of "Nah-nah-nah-nah ... Hey-hey-hey ... Good-bye!"...a smattering of fans in the rightfield bleachers attempted to start the Wave, which seemed out of place in a close game. And then the Rays began serenading the Phillies in farewell -- with the game's outcome in doubt. "This might be the worst use of that song ever," one scribe exclaimed in horror."

Moneyball Meets Health Care

The way to save health care may be by using the same approach small and big market teams used to change their view of stats. In an op-ed to the NY Times; Sox fan and Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, and A's GM Billy Beane outline a way to take health care from worst to first.

Franchises have used this data to answer some of the key questions in baseball: When is an attempted steal worth the risk? Whom should we draft, and in what order? Should we re-sign an aging star player and run the risk of paying for past performance rather than future results?... America’s health care system behaves like a hidebound, tradition-based ball club that chases after aging sluggers and plays by the old rules: we pay too much and get too little in return. To deliver better health care, we should learn from the successful teams that have adopted baseball’s new evidence-based methods. The best way to start improving quality and lowering costs is to study the stats.

See, baseball can make everything better. You are not wasting a day watching a ballgame, you are improving the lives of Americans.

Screw the Kids, We Want Money

Bud Selig has shown that he doesn't really care about protecting baseball for future generations, he wants the payday now. It used to be that kids could watch some playoff games but not anymore; game times are way past when most kids are up, especially on the East Coast. Mr. Selig showed his dislike for earlier start times in an interview yesterday:

Selig said playing day games on weekends is not an alternative.

"We had some afternoon games during the league championship and division series. The ratings were brutal," he said. "The ratings get better and better as the night goes on."

Even if MLB wanted to schedule day games, TV slots would be difficult if not impossible to find during football season.

"The networks have commitments, and they just can't do it," he said. "There's no sense in being anything but blunt about it."

Boras Talks Tek

Scott Boras talked about Jason Varitek with the Boston Globe today:

"If you think about his physical conditioning, he's got many more years to play in this game," Boras said last night. "When he's out there, this club is decisively different. You're really talking about a guy that is inherently valuable. In this day and time, what is a player like that worth?

"We're in the process of finalizing data intake. We have to look at the marketplace. We have to look at similarly situated All-Star players, who they are in stature to their team. There are many comparisons. We're certainly going to look at how those players [were] received in the free agent market and use that as that watermark."

Notice how Boras highlights "All-Star." That kind of overlooks the fact that Tek was voted in as an All-Star purely on name recognition and not for what he had done this season. I do think that Tek does have some value to this team but I can't see giving him more than a 2 year contract. I believe that there is very little chance of Tek coming back to Boston if he is going to go with Boras' plan for a long term big money deal.

MLB Trade Rumors also points out that there is a mass amount of free agent catchers that can call a good game but can't hit.

An MRI revealed that Jed Lowrie had a "sprain and a small non-displaced fracture in his left wrist." One Last Rip on the Rays

I don't have a problem with the Rays as a team although I do have a problem with most of their "fans" and I really have a problem with their ballpark. To show how unprepared for the national stage Tampa Bay is, take a look at their choice for the singers of the National Anthem for Game 1 of the World Series: The Backstreet Boys. The country is already trying to find a reason to watch and this won't help. I think I might be more up for a TBS blooper rerun than to see McCarver and Buck's intro to Game 1 followed by the Backstreet Boys in cowbell central.

Decision Time on Varitek

The Red Sox face a very tough decision on what to do with their captain. When Varitek signed his last deal for 4 years he was the backbone of team and led the Sox in to two World Championships. This season he struggled at the plate but his help with the pitching staff cannot be underestimated; take Jon Lester and Dice-K's improved pitching this year as an example.

Theo does not like to give player past their prime long term deals, look at his track record with Damon, Nomar, and Pedro. When he did give a longer deal to Lowell he was burned by an injury so he will be very leary of going long on Tek. I would bet the Red Sox will not offer anything longer than 2 years to Tek with the potential for a team option for the third year.

There are some big varibles that also come into play in this decision. Varitek had some off the field troubles this season with his divorce which may have affected his performance on the team. Tek is also represented by Scott Boras which means there will be some other teams involved and the years other teams might be willing to offer will go beyond Boston's offer. There are not many catchers out there on the market and with the deal Posada recieved last season this could turn out to a big time bidding war.

Sean McAdam looks at the issue in today's Herald and Mike Eagan has a quick look in the Hartford Courant.

What Next?

Yesterday Theo said the Red Sox were going to keep the team largely intact and that they have a good foundation for the future. Here are the main things that are going to have to be decided before the start of the 2009 season.

1. Catcher - The Red Sox must decide if they are going to re-sign Tek. No matter what they decide they still must look at getting a catcher for the future.

2. Shortstop - Lugo or Lowrie?- Do they try to move Lugo in the offseason? His salary will be an issue and Lowries struggles down the stretch don't make him a sure bet to start.

3. Outfield - The platoon worked this season so they may go with it again but Coco does have some trade value.

4. Recovery- We won't know if Ortiz or Lowell will be back to '07 level until spring training so the Red Sox may make insurance moves by getting a big bat like Mark Teixeira.

5. Starters - Buchholz is off to a good start in the Arizona Fall League but Colon and Byrd are going to be gone, the Sox could go after a big name starter like Peavy. If Masterson starts in '09 they are going to need some help in the bullpen.

The ALCS Reflected The Red Sox This Season

The 2008 Boston Red Sox were hard to put a finger on. They could go on tremendous win streaks followed by epic failures on the road. Injuries were there from the beginning with Schilling's news about the $8 million dollar mistake and right through the playoff with the loss of Mike Lowell. Some players had great years: Pedroia and Youk, some did not: Tek and Ellsbury. In a way the ALCS was very similar to the season; role players had to step up, players that used to be automatic were less than stellar, and the team could be amazing one minute and woefully bad the next. There will be those that say the Red Sox lost because of injuries or because Manny was gone but the Rays had the drive to win and the Sox did not catch them when they had Manny earlier in the season. The team overcame some major challenges this season but never could get over the top. A loss like last night's is not nearly as tough to take as the '03 loss to the Yankees; especially since we are only a year removed from a World Series victory. The loss did show how tough it is to repeat as World Champions. You have to play with the cards you are delt and the Sox did about as well as could be expected. The team could look pretty similar next season with the limited number of free agents unless Theo makes a major deal. Stay tuned.

Rays Prove to Be Too Much For the Red Sox

The game started off so well; Pedroia's early homer and Lester mowing them down in order. The Rays tied it up in the 4th and took the lead in the 5th. Garza settled in and became untouchable, giving up just one more hit until he was pulled after 7 innings. Lester pitched well too but gave up a big homer in the 7th to Aybar. The Red Sox had a chance to comeback in the 8th but could not come up with a big hit and J.D. Drew struck out to end the top half of the inning. After striking out Drew in the 8th, Price returned to pitch the 9th. Bay drew a walk but then Kotsay and Tek both struck out. Lowrie grounded out to end the season for Boston. The Rays looked like the American League champs tonight and will be tough in the World Series. They have some good young talent and should be in the picture for years to come. The Red Sox have some big questions to answer in the offseason but we will get to those in the coming days. On a side note, I was on the live blog at WEEI.com during the game and Curt Schilling logged on to chat for a few innings, he was as outspoken as usual. Thanks to all of the readers who have stayed with Fenway West for our first season on the net and remember that even though the games are over, we cover the Red Sox year round.

A Game Day Decision

In preparing for the upcoming final game of the ALCS, I am facing a dilemma. I look into my closest to pick my Red Sox shirt for the game and I don't know which one to pick.

Do I go with Tek, the hero of last night? My Tek shirt is old enough that it does not have the "C" on it and this could be the last time he plays a game for the Red Sox.

Do I go with the Papelbon shirt? Paps ended last night's game with such determination that he embodies the confidence of the Red Sox.

Do I go with the Big Papi jersey? Ortiz got the series turned around but it is a home jersey and the Sox are on the road.

Do I go with my Yankee Hater "Sox in Seven" shirt from 2004? It does seem appropriate but it is aimed at the Yankees.

In the end I go with a no name Red Sox shirt. After all, this is going to take a team effort, but I did pick one with a shamrock on it just in case.

After drowning his sorrows while watching the Red Sox beat the Rays last night, Joba Chamberlain thought it would be a good idea to take one for the road until he had a run-in with Nebraska's finest. Hank's favorite pitcher was arrested at 1 am for DUI.

In other good news for Sox fans, bad news for Yanks fans, Dale Sveum may coach third in the Bronx next season.

Panic By the Bay

As Game 7 fast approaches, one team from the American League is set to play its last game of the season. The Red Sox have been there before, multiple times with mixed results, and recent history is on their side. The Rays are in a state of shock, their hitting has dried up, their pitching has been shaky and now their fans and some of their players are beginning to panic. Here's a few examples of the fear and why they should be afraid:

Game 7 is Rays' shot at history- St. Petersburg Times

The Rays can say they are not shaken. They can pretend their nerves are not frayed. They can act as if they will take the field this evening with their usual carefree outlook on the world.

But history suggests they are scared hitless.

Who Would You Rather Be Tonight? - Tampa Tribune
They spend the winter thinking about being seven runs up and seven outs away from the AL pennant the other night in Boston. That's their Bartman.

Rays of (False?) Hope - WEEI

“We know what happened. We were on the damn field,” Floyd continued. “You never put it out of your mind. You never completely get over what happened the other night. Hell, we’re all human. I think the most important thing is you don’t want to watch it over and over and over and read the same thing.”

Yet that is precisely what the Rays will find it nearly impossible to avoid. Whether or not the team has moved on, all of its members face questions about where the American League Championship Series went off the rails.

A comment from a dbayrays.com reader:

but it’s going to be awfully tough. Garza in a Game 7 makes me extremely nervous… which one is going to show up?

I’ve never believed in momentum, but when you give a team like Boston life after having the series all but wrapped up, the other team does get a ton of confidence. I also don’t believe in “comeback magic” but Boston can do no f'ing wrong when they get down big in these series. Like I said earlier, it’s like they almost purposely get down in these series.

Red Sox Step Up in a Big Way

Even though they did not have to stage a big comeback, the Red Sox did have their share of heroes tonight. Youk and Tek each had big home runs, and Papi had a big 2 out base hit. Josh Beckett pitched well enough to keep it close and get it to the pen. You can't say enough about how well the bullpen was tonight; Okajima, Masterson, and Papelbon pitched 4 no-hit innings giving up just 1 walk. All of the momentum is now with Boston in the final game of the ALCS tomorrow night.

WTF TBS????

Why is there a blooper show on???? Where are the playoffs???? are you f'n kidding me???

UPDATE: Here is what the vidiots at TBS had to say about their national disaster tonight:

Two circuit breakers in our Atlanta transmission operations tripped causing the master router and its backup – which are necessary to transmit any incoming feed outbound – to shut down. This impacted our live feed from being distributed to any of the other networks in the Turner portfolio and caused the delay in our coverage. Both our primary and backup routers were impacted by this problem. We apologize to baseball fans for this mishap that caused a delay in our coverage.

Time to Tase the Cowbells

Extra Bases notes that when the Sox are down 2-3 in a series they have always won Game 6. Here are the years when that has happened: 1903, 1967, 1975, 1986, 2003, 2004, 2007.

The cowbells will be out in full force since they have added over 5,000 seats for tonight's game and with those new seats come more tasers. The cowbells can quickly be silenced if Josh Beckett returns to his traditional October form, but I'm not so sure about the tasers.

Joe Maddon is Still in Shock

In yesterday's press conference Joe Maddon made some comments that showed the shock of game 5 has not worn off:

"Everyone's glomming onto the fact that we lost that game (Thursday) night and how we did, which we shouldn't have," manager Joe Maddon said Friday during some bleary-eyed media availability. "It should not have happened that way. But we still won two out of three and maintained homecourt advantage.

"It's working out in a sense the way we had planned it. Now we just have to go out and execute it."

Homecourt advantage???? Last time I checked the game is played on a field, even in that dump called the Trop. So the Rays planned to lose game 5, earlier he said he was playing Kazmir because he is better at Fenway, which is it?

"Yankes" Fans Display Their Intellect

Sean Bunn is the Red Sox Nation governor from North Carolina. He had organized a viewing party in Raleigh the night the Sox lost to Tampa Bay by the score of 13-4. Adding insult to injury, upon returning home after the game that night, he discovered that his condo had been vandalized by "Yankes" fans. Vandals broke into his house and spray painted the NY logo, pinstripes (jail bars?), and other vulgarisms all over his home, including Jeter and A-Rod's uniform numbers on the back of his dress shirts. (He may donate the shirts to The Jimmy Fund to be auctioned off.)

Big Papi Crushes a Ball into the Ray Tank During BP

The Boston Red Sox held a workout today at the Trop while the Rays took the day off. During the BP portion of the workout Big Papi sent a message to his opponents:

"While he was taking batting practice, he crushed a ball to deep right-center field, some 430 feet from home plate and deposited a ball into the fish tank with live Rays in it.

He put his arms in the air and screamed "I just killed a Ray."

Last week people at the Trop were feeding the rays little Red Sox snacks, Big Papi thought they might want a bigger treat.

[SOX ON LIFE-SUPPORT]
Boston Writer Summons Ghost Of Carlton Fisk, Renders Death Inevitable For Red Sox
OK, we have one link to help RAYSHEADS put everything back into perspective...

Steve Buckley of the Boston Herald says the Red Sox were dead and came back to life and compares last night's Red Sox win to game 6 of the 1975 World Series by summoning the ghost of Carlton Fisk.
Yet the fact remains: The Red Sox were dead, and dead teams are not supposed to wake up. It is scientifically impossible. You’re dead, you’re dead. Then again, if dead teams did not awaken, we would not have Bobby Thomson and Carlton Fisk and all that.
Somebody needs to remind Buckley that the Red Sox lost game 7 of the 1975 World Series.

Teams can come back to life. It is a thing we like to call "life-support". But eventually the plug must be pulled.

Apparently the folks at Rays Index seem to be forgetting about 2004. The Red Sox did win the next night, and the 3 after that, and then the next four to win the World Series. Before they start thinking that Beckett is done they need to remember how bad Schilling pitched in his first start of the 2004 ALCS. Also know that in 3 innings last night, Papi, Crisp, and Drew all broke out of their slumps. The monstah is alive and cannot be stopped.

ONE FOR THE AGES

I am still in shock. The Red Sox were done, the season was over, with 2 outs in the 7th inning they trailed by 7 runs. When Kazmir left the game the bats came alive. Pedroia got it started, they Big Papi 2004 made an encore appearance at the Fens putting the Sox within 3. In the 8th Bay walked and Drew hit a two run tater...Sox were one away. Kotsay then doubled and Crisp had his longest AB of the season before driving in the winning run. Masterson got a double play to end the top of the 9th setting up the scene for the miracle at Fenway. With 2 outs Youk grounded to third but reached second on a throwing error. Bay was walked and J.D. Drew had a walk off hit to force a game 6. Tito made a great move by bringing Papelbon in early and the Red Sox bats came alive at the last possible moment. I admit I had given up hope but stayed with the game.

Some A-Rod Humor While Your Waiting for Game 5

A-Rod has gone back to trying to steal the Red Sox thunder, this time he may announce he is dating Madonna right before the Sox win game 7 of the ALCS:

Madonna’s plans with A-Rod extend beyond the concert: the singer is reportedly planning a trip to Malawi when her "Sticky & Sweet" tour ends, and A-Rod is said to be joining her. The trip is meant to be a fact-finding mission to raise awareness for Madonna’s Raising Malawi charity (a rep for Raising Malawi didn’t comment by deadline).

A source from the Kabbalah Centre in New York City says that before that trip, “expect them to make a public appearance together at the Kabbalah Centre here.”

27 outs away from possible end of Mike Timlin's career

27 outs away from the possible end of Tim Wakefield's career

27 outs away from the possible end of the Red Sox Capitain, Jason Varitek's time in Boston.

Rays Fans Should Study History

It might be a little early for this post from Tom Korun of ABC Sports in Tampa:

Sorry Red Sox fans............IT'S OVER!!!!!!

I'm an optomistic guy by nature, but those Red Sox fans who think their boys will win the ALCS are drinking the ice tea, imported from Long Island!

I know the history with Boston. They have come back from situations like this before. However, they are minus Man-Ram, and his absence has affected Big Papi bigtime. Without David Ortiz's bat, they're sunk.

Moreover, we haven't even attacked Boston's achilles heal in this blog, pitching. I will grant you, I along with every sane sports fan thought Jon Lester would not be beaten at Fenway. He was smoked at Fenway!

I would love to see him eat his words over the next few days.

The Rays are sprinting around the bases, making it look oh so easy. Upset? This is no upset. At this point, the only upset would be if the ALCS requires a Game 6 on Saturday at Tropicana Field.
and so do some in the New England media:
The Red Sox season is just about over....Game 5 is Thursday, and this does not appear to be the year for any big comebacks.

Rosenthal Plays the Race Card

Fox's vertically challenged sideline reporter Ken Rosenthal wrote a piece today saying free agents might avoid the Red Sox because they look like a bunch of whiteys:

"The question is whether the Red Sox will lose players they want because of the makeup of their club, the perception of the city or both. Players generally seek comfort as well as money when they make career decisions."
Is Rosenthal suggesting that players can't get play with people that are not in their own race? It sure looks like that to me. He also added the Manny trade to his argument:

"Yet, fairly or not, Ramirez's messy divorce with the Red Sox could raise suspicions that the team prefers a certain type of player — unassuming, conformist, white. The current makeup of the team's roster might create similar notions, even as the Red Sox say that nothing could be further from the truth."
Rosenthal tries to ride the fence in his article by saying race is an issue and it is not an issue. Yes the Sox have a lot of white players, yes the Sox had a history of racial problems during the Yawkey years but I don't know anyone other than Ken Rosenthal that thinks the Red Sox are trying to be a "white" team. If he really thinks that is the case he should come out and say it fully and if a player won't come to Boston because of this issue let them say it out in the open.

Time To Get The Red Sox Shrines Going Again

Admit it, you thought the Red Sox would cruise last night. You were almost relieved when the sac fly ended game 2 so you could go to bed knowing that the cowbells would be gone and all things good would prevail at Fenway. Lester's crash and the silence from the bats may have you second guessing the old town team. Now is the time to revive the voodoo, mojo, and various superstitions that propelled the Sox to victory in 2004 and in 2007. Wear your lucky hat, eat your special meal and sit in the right spot; the team needs your help.

Can Wake Save the Red Sox?

Once again the season is in the hands of knuckleballer Tim Wakefield. Wake had some good outings against the Yanks in the '03 ALCS before...well you know what happened. Wake has had some bad playoff games since then; his ERA in the ALCS last year: 9.64. He needs to get through at least 5 or Tito will be forced to go with Byrd again and with the amount he threw yesterday it could get ugly fast. I have faith that Wake can turn things around and bring the mojo back, if he is on he could screw up some of the timing of Rays hitters and we all know their timing is pretty good right now.

Game 3 Did Not Go As Planned

Just in case Beckett had a problem (which he did) the Red Sox would have Lester to stop the bleeding and be back for game 7 if needed. To quote the movie Stripes- Custer had a plan, too. -- Russell Ziskey. Jon Lester lost his first game at Fenway since the spring and in a big way. He gave up 5 runs in 5 2/3 innings including two gopher balls. Byrd came in to take one for the team and he also was victim to the longball giving up 2 of his own. Boston's offense was lackluster at best and there are some serious slumps going on. Ellsbury is now 0-14 in the ALCS, although he did get the Sox only RBI in the game. Papi went 0-4 and Tek continued to struggle going 0-3. Sox fans booed Tek and many left very early today, two things you do not usually see. It is not time to hit the panic button but todays game was not what the nation had expected. The Red Sox need Wake to step up in a big way tomorrow and maybe Kevin Cash can provide some kind of a spark to the offense.

Jon Lester is Ready To Put the Sox Back On Top

Tito did not look like a genius on Saturday but having Jon Lester start today may make people get back in his corner. Lester is 11-1 at Fenway this season with an ERA of 2.49. In his last start at Fenway he went 7 innings and only gave up 4 hits. The start before that he wen 6 innings and only gave up 2 hits. (I was lucky enough to be at that game) The only variable is that this is a day game where his ERA is higher than it is for night. The home crowd and the absense of cowbells should be a welcome respit for the next few days and with some breaks going the right way, a trip back to the Trop may not be necessary.

Will the Shadow Be a Factor?

Tomorrow's forecast calls for partly cloudy skies early. If the clouds clear before game-time the shadow between the mound and the batter's box could be a big factor in the early going. Wheeler Should Be Able to Pitch Tomorrow

Even though Dan Wheeler went for three innings last night he should be able to go tomorrow if needed. From ProJo:

JIM HICKEY: We had a conversation last night prior to sending him out there for, I believe, part of the third inning and even the fourth inning. I had seen him do it before in Houston where he would pitch two-plus innings, three-plus innings, parts of four innings, extra-inning games where it was do-or-die, winner-go-home type of a thing, and I told Joe he would be fine, and I knew he would be fine, and I've seen him also rebound from that well.

I would anticipate that he would be able to pitch Monday, but I would also agree with what Joe said, just wait until the emotion type of stuff goes away and then see where we are. But I would be surprised if he wasn't available.

I had that one at-bat earlier in the game where I tried to bunt the ball and it slammed me in the helmet. That could have been bad if you wear it in the face or the nose or the eye. It gave me a headache, but it could have been worse. I'm fine now.

Josh Beckett says he is healthy and that location was the only problem last night. This is going to give the Red Sox a dilema for Game 6; do you start him after his last two awful performances, or do you go with Byrd.
