Bid To Eat Sushi With Dice-K....You May Have to Lift Up the Chop Sticks For Him

Daisuke Matsuzaka is auctioning off Sushi dinner for charity on ebay. From the ebay description: "Japanese sensation and Red Sox ace Dice-K and his wife, Tomoyo, will join you and three friendsfor dinner at the renowned Japanese restaurant, HARU, in Boston. You'll enjoy the company of one of the world's greatest sports stars along with the finest food and service - all in your own private dining room. (A translator will be provided)" The leading bid is now $10,100 but the reserve has not been met. The proceeds of the auction will go to the charity Good Sports.

Dice-K may have plenty of time to eat sushi now that he is injured and will not be pitching for a while. He is having an MRI in Boston tomorrow to further diagnose what the Red Sox originally reported as "shoulder fatigue."

Yankees Flake On Deal With Fan

Alexander Martinez caught two home runs in one game at Yankee Stadium last year, the first was Matsui's 100th as a Yankee. He exchanged the historic ball in a deal for a bat, an autographed ball from Matsui, and 15 tickets to this year's All-Star Game. He received the first two items but says the Yankees are denying him the 15 tickets and say they never made the deal. Typical behavior from the Evil Empire, earlier this season they flaked on a deal with some school kids.

Sox Bats Can't Deliver For Wake

Tim Wakefield pitched a great game with 8 K's and no walks. He went 8 innings giving up only 1 run on a solo homer. Once again the Red Sox bats were ice cold; for the second time this road trip they have been blanked, this time managing just 2 hits. They had a chance in the 9th when Manny and Casey both walked but Coco failed to get the go ahead hit and ended the game with a weak grounder. The Red Sox have now lost 5 of the 6 games on this road trip and are a game and a half behind the Rays in the division. At least the C's won tonight.

Wake tosses only 50 pitches in first 5 innings

Although the Sox are currently on the short end of a 1-0 pitcher's duel, Tim Wakefield made it through 5 innings by throwing only 50 pitches. That's an average of 10 per inning in case any yankee fans are reading. I got curious and decided to find the record for fewest number of pitches thrown by one pitcher in a complete game. (Wake was still pitching into the 6th and finished it with a total of 62 pitches so far.)

Masterson May Take Dice-K's Next Start

The ProJo is reporting that Justin Masterson's debut with the PawSox has been moved up from Sunday to tomorrow. Buchholz is scheduled to pitch on Friday which will make him unavailable for Dice-K's start if he can't go. There are two possible explanations for this; either Masterson is going to make his third start for the Red Sox next week or the injury to Dice-K is not that serious and he will be ready to go. My money is on Masterson making the start.

Is Dave Magadan to Blame?

When you take a close look at some stats this season there are a few troubling signs. Youk is the only starter who is batting over .300 (.306). But the more troubling stat is Walk Percentage. Last season Ortiz, Youk, Manny, J.D. Drew, Hinske and Tek all had a walk percentage above 10%. This season only Ortiz, Ellsbury and Lowell have a BB% over 10 (each is at 12%). Last season Tek was the only starter with a K% above 20%. This season Manny, Tek, and Drew are all above 20% K-rate. Cash, even though he is not a starter, is at 30%. The Red Sox are swinging a little more freely this season and the blame has to be put squarely with hitting coach Dave Magadan. Don't get me wrong, the Sox are an excellent offensive team, they just need to tighten up a bit and it is Magadan's job to get them to do it.

Bobby Kielty's Long Road Back

Things have been rough for Bobby Kielty since he hit the game winning home run in Game 4 of the 2007 World Series. He chose to accept a spot with the PawSox after he was cut from the Red Sox at the start of the season in the hope that he could be back with the big club sometime this season. Much of the landscape has changed since he reported to Pawtucket; there is now a good chance that Coco will not be traded, and Brandon Moss and Jonathan Van Every have emerged as a good options when another outfielder is needed in Boston. Shortly after the season began Bobby Kielty went on the minor league DL after having surgery on his hand, missing a time when he would have been called up. He made his first of 2 rehab starts last night for the Single A Lancaster going 0-2. If Kielty is going to get back to Boston this season he needs Coco to be traded and he needs to beat out Moss and Van Every for the fourth outfielder spot. Injuries are bound to happen so I wouldn't count out Kielty but it is going to be a big test for him to find a way back into the limelight.

After Manny tied the game with a 3 run homer in the 6th the game stayed even until the bottom of the 9th. Timlin came in to replace Okajima and gave up a lead-off infield single to Balentien. He was successfully bunted over to second. Reed grounded out for the second out and Balentien advanced to third. Ichiro was intentionally walked and was allowed to take second. Lopez came up and in a 1-2 count, hit a line drive past the diving glove of Lowell to send in the winning run.

Are The Rays for Real?

As we hit the unofficial start of summer there is a strange name hanging around at the top of the A.L. East; the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays are not just top in the East, they have the best winning percentage in all of baseball! When you look at the history of the Rays it is more surprising how bad they have been with all of the early draft picks they have had. The Marlins and D-Backs have both won it all in their short histories but the Rays have never come close. Why then are they doing well this year? Tampa's pitching has been getting better each year; this year they have 2 pitchers that any team would like for numbers one and two in their rotation. James Shields has an ERA of 3.38 with 52 strikeouts, Scott Kazmir has an ERA of 1.50 in his 5 starts since coming off of the DL. The Rays have some great all around players like Carl Crawford and B.J. Upton and they are getting production from guys like Jonny Gomes. The Rays are going to fade at some point this season and I think they will be competing with Toronto for third place in the A.L. East (Sox will win the division and Yanks will get the wildcard.) However, the Rays are going to keep getting better and will be a contender in '09 and beyond.

Sox Bats Come Alive in the 8th To Give Colon 2nd Win

In what started out looking like a carbon copy of a game in the Oakland series ended up being a pretty good win for the Sox. Felix Hernandez had a perfect game going into the 4th before Big Papi hit his second home run in 2 days. Colon was cruising with a 3 hitter into the 6th before he got into some trouble but was able to get out of it only giving up 1 run. In the 8th the Sox took the lead with a Pedroia double. A few more hits and a walked in run gave the Sox a 5-1 lead and gave Colon a chance for his second win. Okajima kept them of the board in the 8th and Papelbon came in for the 9th. Paps almost let them back into the game facing 6 batters in the inning and giving up 2 runs before getting the last out. The road winning streak is now at 1.

Sox Arrive In Seattle Just In Time

7 Games. That is how many road losses in a row the Sox have and it is also the number the Mariners are trying to avoid for consecutive losses. There is not another team that Boston would have a better chance of ending their road losing streak as Seattle. The Mariners are coming off a sweep in the Bronx yesterday and even though they are the home team, they will be the ones who are jet-lagged. Bartolo Colon knows this team well; he is 12-10 against them in 26 career starts. Red Sox Nation will be well represented in the Pacific Northwest as usual and Manny is overdue for a home run. If the Moose doesn't run over any players the Sox should get back on track tonight.

Streaky Sox Drop 3 in Oakland

The clouds gave way to a beautiful sunny day in the East Bay but the Red Sox road woes continued. Manny's night of rest helped as he went 3-4 at the plate today but #499 still eludes him (so did a fly ball to left). Can Lester Do it Again?

Jon Lester may need to throw another no-hitter if the Red Sox want to avoid a sweep today in Oakland. There is no trip to Japan to blame for the lack of hitting this time, it is time for the Sox to start hitting on the road. At last night's game I would say that about half of the crowd was Red Sox fans and I would bet there will be more today. It is pretty incredible when you think how far away the Sox are from Fenway and you still hear the "Let's Go Red Sox!" or "Yoouuuk" chants. There were Red Sox flags flying in the parking lot. Sox batters should feel comfortable at the plate and should be able to deliver; I really believe the bats will wake up today. The A's do not hit lefties well so Lester has a chance for another good outing. My son will be happy because Manny will be in left today in front of our seats. We may not get to see #500 but #499 will be OK. After last night, a run would be nice.

Who Took The Bats?

Last night the Sox had a hard time getting hits but tonight's game was worse. Someone needs to tell the equipment manager that he left the bats at Fenway, or maybe he traded 10 of them for a player. Either way, Boston really struggled at the plate tonight. Duchscherer shot down the Sox pitching a perfect game until he beaned Tek in the sixth. Big Papi had the Red Sox only hit in the seventh but Boston never got a runner to second base. Street came in for the 9th to finish off the 1 hitter for Oakland. Josh Beckett pitched well but not well enough to win this game. I did get to see an amazing catch by Ellsbury in left and a pretty good catch of a foul ball by a Sox fan a few seats away, but that was about it. Manny and Lugo had the night off so maybe they can provide a spark for the offense tomorrow.

Tonight's Game

Almost time to get in the car and head down towards Oakland. After a stop at Marin Brewing Company for a few pre-game beers it will time to head to Fenway West to watch Beckett regain his form against the A's. Today's weather is way below average for this time of year and the game time temp should be in the 50's with a chance of rain. One week ago we were in the upper 90's. A coworker from Framingham, Mass. got 3 third row seats from a season ticket holder to bring himself, me and another coworker from Rhode Island to the game. I really wanted to see Manny hit #500 but it looks like a long shot. I do have tickets for tomorrow's game too but I think Tito is going to give Manny one of the games off. My 3 year old son is really excited to see Manny (his favorite player) on Sunday so I don't know how I will explain it to him if he has a day off. This will be the last trip to Oakland for the Sox this year so lets hope they put on a good show for the West Coast fans.

Winning Streak Ends With Ugly Loss To Oakland

The Red Sox had a hard time getting to Harden who was pitching a perfect game until Pedroia homered off him in the 4th. Total Disaster

The New York Daily News has summed up the current state of the Yankees as "total disaster." The Yankees were crushed by the O's tonight by a score of 12-2. 5 of the runs would not have scored if Jeter hadn't made a costly error.

How about this from Newsday: " The Yankees looked more like Little Leaguers at the outset and the crowd was none too pleased. Mike Mussina lasted only two-thirds of an inning, matching the shortest outing of his career, and the Yankees booted the ball around, botching routine plays in first two innings of their embarrassing 12-2 thrashing by the Orioles.

And this from the NY Post: "The Yankees converted baseball's highest cathedral into the world's largest commode last night."

Dumbass Hank's comment on the game: "There's really not much to say." Hank since you can't think of anything how about: "we suck," or "I guess we should have traded for Johan, " or "I'm sorry Joe Torre, please, please come back," or "Does anyone have Roger*s phone #?"

Okajima came in for the 8th and got in a bases loaded jam after giving up a hit and 2 walks but was able to keep the 1 run lead and get 2 outs. Papelbon was called in for a high pressure 4 out save. Schilling Reflects on Lester's No Hitter

Curt Schilling has a new post up at 38pitches.com where he discussses Lester's no hitter. Here are a few highlights:

"The thing I smiled most about, and was most proud of, well things actually, was the fact he kept within himself, never let a pitch, or an at bat get away from him, and showed why he’s a potential top of the rotation, ace kind of guy."

"It’s the thing that will always make baseball the greatest game on earth. On ANY given night you have many chances to see something you’ll never see again, or that’s never happened before, after over a 100 years of the game being played already."

I have to agree with Schilling on that, you never know what you are going to see at a baseball game...kinda like going to a Grateful Dead concert. I was at the game in Oakland last season when Schilling almost had his no hitter. The strangest thing I ever saw at a game was a guy who jumped from the upper deck at Yankee Stadium into the net behind home plate. He told reporters he did it because he thought the game was boring. I think it was because he was a drunk Yankee fan and the Sox were winning.

LESTER THROWS A NO HITTER AGAINST K.C.

Jon Lester threw his first career no hitter against the Kansas City Royals tonight. He has faced just one more than the minimum before walking the first batter in the ninth. He then got a grounder to third advancing the runner to second for the first out in the 9th. DeJesus grounded out to Youk for the second out. The Fenway crowd cheered as Lester got a foul for strike one, a swing and a miss for strike 2, missed high with a fastball for a 1-2 count followed by another foul ball. A swinging strike ended the game and Lester had thrown the 18th no-no in Sox history.

Lester spoke after the game:

"Words can't describe it right now. I really didn't [think about pitching a no-hitter], just tried to focus on throwing one pitch at a time and going after guys and staying focused and not worrying about the score or how many hits or whatever they were doing... I can't lie, it went through my head a couple of times in the ninth but it just worked out."

2004 ALCS Scorecard Also Buried at New Yankee Stadium

According to the New York Times: Construction worker "Gino Castignoli, told friends that while he worked at the stadium for one day last summer he buried an official scorecard from the 2004 Yankees-Red Sox American League Championship Series." This time he is not telling anyone where it is. Not sure how true this story is but it is going to make Hank mad and there will always be speculation unless they take a jackhammer to the whole place.

104 MLB Players May Be Sopoenaed By Feds For Steroids

Remember the 2003 drug tests by MLB to determine if they needed a more stringent drug policy? The tests were supposed to be anonymous to see how ingrained PED's were in MLB. It turns out that even though the tests were intended to be anonymous the Feds have obtained the names of those players that failed the tests as part of the BALCO investigation and may subpoena them to testify. The MLBPA is trying to keep the list secret but as we all know these things always come out. The players to be subpoenaed may not necessarily be those that were listed in the Mitchell Report. Remember the Mitchell Report only included 89 players and some were not playing in 2003. There could be another round of players about to take a fall. I wonder how many more Yankees will be on this list.

Joe Girardi Countdown

With the Yankees in last place and a weekend sweep by their crosstown rivals the countdown to Joe Girardi's firing has begun. Take a look at some of the press this morning:
"Girardi has been knocked for being hyper-involved, unorthodox and (occasionally) paranoid - sort of like Tony La Russa, minus all the winning."

or this from Newsday:
"But this year feels different, for a lot of reasons. There aren't many players to feel good about and the manager, for some reason, doesn't inspire the same kind of serene confidence that his predecessor did."

In reality Joe is not going to be fired because he was Dumbass Hank's choice over Torre, the real countdown is going to be on Brian Cashman. Either way it is great when we get to watch the Yankees squirm.

The Mets Wuz Robbed!

Carlos Delgado of the NY Mets hit a home run with 2 on in the top of the 4th inning tonight at Yankee Stadium. The ball hit the foul pole and bounced into the stands. It was ruled a home run by 3rd base umpire Mike Reilly. Derek Jeter ran over to protest. After a very brief umpire's powwow in which you can see home umpire Bob Davidson say 'foul', Reilly's call, made about 90' feet closer than Davidson's, was overturned and ruled a foul ball.
Repeated viewings of the replays show the ball clearly hitting the left field pole and bouncing into foul territory. One angle of the replays shows the pole sitting about 2' inside fair territory! One wonders how many balls have hit that pole and now have a questionable result. That'll take some research, but for now, we'll have to take a small bit of solace in that Delgado hit a run scoring single on the next pitch.
TV viewers have the advantage of instant replay that umpires do not have. This play and ensuing questionable call will only keep the discussion continuing.
Mets lead 5-2 in the bottom of the 7th. Uh, make that 11-2. (grin)

Youuuuukkkkk!!!!!

I just clicked on the 'league leaders' link at redsox.com and see that Kevin Youkilis is in the top 4 in 8 of the 9 hitting categories that were displayed, including 1st in slugging percentage. His fielding percentage while playing 1st base and right field is 1.000.

As long as he doesn't wear himself out as the season goes on, this could be a bar setting season for him! Might as well pencil him in to start at 1st on July 15th!

Offense Saves Beckett

Josh Beckett looked like he was throwing BP early in today's game giving up 4 home runs but Tito stuck with him and he ended up getting the win. The Red Sox offense answered with 4 home runs of their own including 2 by Big Papi. Boston scored 11 runs on 15 hits and completed the 3 game sweep of the Brewers. Delcarmen looked shaky in relief but got out of a jam in the 8th before Papelbon earned another save in th 9th.

Let's Win Two

The Red Sox swept the doubleheader with a close win over the Brewers tonight. Wake looked much better than his last outing and pitched into the 6th before he ran into trouble and was pulled. The Sox had a 5 run lead in the game fueled by Mike Lowell who had a home run and 4 RBI's in the game but they let the Brewers take the lead in the 7th. Some sloppy defense and hits off of Hansen gave the Brew Crew a one run advantage. The Sox rallied in the bottom of the 7th and regained the lead. Lopez pitched a scoreless eighth and Timlin picked up his first save of the season in the ninth.

Is # 499 Coming Today?

Okajima is Hurt

Nothing like giving up a game winning grand slam to help find an injury. Hideki Okajima is going to be shut down for a few games by the Sox because of a sore left wrist.

Okajima also admitted to the Globe that he does not like pitching with runners on base: "Little bit uncomfortable. All the coaches, manager know I am not successful with a runner behind [me]. So why use me?"

The injury is not serious enough to send him to the DL but it does limit the options the Red Sox have in the bullpen. They are going to need to get some quality starts the next few days and hope Hansen or Delcarmen can deliver before it gets to Papelbon.

Trade Rumor Mill

Jason Stark of ESPN is reporting that the Brewers have shown some interest in Tavarez. He also reports that the Sox have been discussing dealing Aardsma and Javier Lopez as well. Boston has to free up some roster space if they want to bring Colon up and keep Buchholz on the team when he returns from the DL. The bullpen has not been great this season so they may want get some new blood or some pitching prospects for the future. It seems that Theo has been charging a high price for Sox players so I would not expect to see teams lining up to make offers but as the injuries pile up around the league the offers may start to trickle in.

Tuesday's Starter

After yesterday's great effort, Bartolo Colon seemed likely to get the call to make his regular season debut for the Red Sox, but his pitch count is still below 70. Colon will make one more start with the PawSox before joining the big club in Boston. This leaves the Red Sox with a choice to make for Tuesday's game against KC. Masterson has been struggling lately so the Sox may call up David Pauley once again or give Charlie Zink his MLB debut. Zink is a knuckleballer who has been taught by Wakefield and has a 2.91 ERA this season. Can you imagine 2 knuckleballers in the same rotation? Can Sox fans survive this?

Bartolo Colon pitched well in his second rehab start for Pawtucket since he injured his oblique. El Gordo went 6 scoreless innings giving up just one hit. According to redsox.com, Colon "showed excellent command from start to finish, as he worked both sides of the plate well and threw 15 first-strike pitches with his velocity topping out at 95 mph." Colon had 4 K's and no walks in the game. It looks like he is ready to join the Red Sox and fill in for Buchholz. If he can pitch like this in Boston he will have been the steal of the century.

Get Ready For Some Old Faces

Inter-league play starts up tomorrow with the Brew Crew coming to the Fens. There will be some interesting story lines as fan favorite Gabe Kapler returns to face his old squad. The steroid user has lost his job as the closer for Milwaukee after signing a $10 million contract in the off-season, get ready for some boos (for what he did last year) and some cheers (when he gives up a few long balls) when Gagne enters a game. The Sox will be facing Jeff Suppan, also a former Red Sox, when the 3 game series begins on Friday.

J.D. Drew- hyper-extended his wrist (MRI negative) but will be out at least one more game.

Julio Lugo- was out again yesterday from the concussion, should be available if Mills needs him.

Coco Crisp- left last night's game with a migraine and nausea, his status is still unclear for today.

If Crisp can't go tonight the Sox may have to make a roster move to bring up Bailey, Thurston or Van Every. Hansen could be sent down for a day or two unless J.D. goes on the DL. My bet is that J.D. will end up on the DL because he rarely plays when he is even slightly hurt. There is no use keeping him off the DL if he is not going into the games anyway.

Beckett Can't Stop The Slide...Sox Lose Again

Josh Beckett did not pitch well yesterday and now the Sox find themselves in the middle of a losing streak. In a game that looked very similar to the one before, Beckett gave up runs early and the Red Sox could not make up the difference. Beckett was tagged for 11 hits and 5 runs but once again the bullpen pitched well. Offensively Boston could not get the big hit and left too many people on base. Manny came up in the 7th with bases loaded an no outs and after a 10 pitch at bat he hit into a 1-2-3 double play. Lowell followed with an out to end the inning...no runs scored. Bench coach Brad Mills had to make an interesting choice when J.D. Drew got hurt once again and put Youk in right for the first time in his career. Boston tries to get a win streak going at 3 pm eastern today against fireballer and often wild pitcher Cabrera in Baltimore.

Tavarez, Lugo, Loretta...Updates Galore!

Julian Tavarez may be traded by week's end but don't expect much for him. Extra Bases reported that the Rockies and other teams were not willing to give up any decent prospects even with the Sox eating most of his salary.

Julio Lugo missed another game last night with a mild concussion but Tito says that he is day to day and may see action tonight. Cora has gone 6-8 since he returned from the DL. Check back later for the lineup.

Ken Rosenthal reported that the Red Sox inquired about Mark Loretta during spring training as insurance in the infield. I saw Loretta go 1-5 last night at AT&T Park bringing his average down to the Mendoza Line, not an improvement over Lugo. I think with the production we have seen out of Lowrie the need is no longer there.

Karl Ravech takes a shot at the Sox

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the curse of ESPN’s John Kruk that he cast on the yankees last September in Cleveland in a Baseball Tonight commercial. (Remember the flies?)
Well, Karl Ravech takes a shot this past week at Curt Schilling and his ankle surgery in 2004. In the commercial, Schilling empties some sand out of his sock. Ravech, eating fries, ‘accidentally’ drops a catsup packet which lands in the sock. “The ankle looked fine to me’, Ravech says.
I find it somewhat interesting that after the yankees get their turn at the ESPN marketing whipping post, they drag up an incident from almost 4 years ago to take a shot at the Sox. I can hear the phone call in my head that ol’ dumbass Hank could have made to ESPN demanding equal time. I mean, if the man has the cajones to threaten a member of the mob over a t-shirt…

Tavarez Is Designated for Assignment

Julian Tavarez has been designated for assignment to make a roster spot for Sean Casey who is returning from the DL. Most people believed that Craig Hansen would be sent back down but today the Sox have decided to keep him and send Julian packing. Tavarez did not pitch well in relief this season with an ERA over 6. It is very likely that the Sox will trade Julian before the 10 day deadline or they will be forced to waive him. Teams including the Rockies have shown interest in him as a starter, a position where he has proven to be somewhat effective in recent years. If you believe Manny he may be headed to Milwaukee for the bratwurst...or is it the chorizo?

Thanks to The Bottom Line for the tip.

Manny Gives Himself An A+ On Defense

Manny Ramirez made some very interesting comments to the Herald's Rob Bradford yesterday. Here are a few highlights:

“I think I’m the best ever to play left field in Boston”

“How am I going to win a Gold Glove if they take me out in the eighth...If Youkilis can win one, why can’t I? I only made two errors last year. Put a good word in for me."

And his best quote:

"Julian Tavarez will be traded to Milwaukee for one of the team’s racing sausages"
Can the sausage pitch? He probably has an ERA under 6.

More Thoughts

Tito has done an absolute fantastic job of getting adequate playing time for Crisp and Ellsbury. I didn’t think Ellsbury would hit .350 again, but he’s hitting well, nonetheless. Crisp is finally hitting above .300 where he’s been expected to hit since arriving in Beantown. Colon appears to be back on track resuming his career. With Timlin, Tavarez, and DelCarmen struggling somewhat this year, Theo will have bargaining chips to go along with looming tough trade decisions to be made.

Joe Morgan was... well, Joe Morgan. At least Jon Miller was there.

The Twins’ Delmon Young has quite the strong arm, but I doubt throwing bats at umpires will become standard training procedure.

Eric Gagne is 1-2, 6.89 for the Brewers and has been removed as their closer.

Thoughts on Tim Wakefield as Sox are Doubled Up (4-8) by Twins by 5th Inning

It can be frustrating to be a Sox fan on the west coast. Few games are on TV over the course of the season and local games are limited to one or two trips to Oakland a year. I was extremely excited to be able to watch one of my all time favorite pitchers, Tim Wakefield, play on TV today. Making the game more appealing were the facts that Wake just came off of arguably his best performance of the year and that he would be pitching indoors where he usually pitches well. First inning goes well for Wake, 3 up and 3 down on 16 pitches. Finally I get to see Wake on a good night!! Too soon did I get excited.

Although dejected about Wake getting knocked out early, I wasn’t worried about the hole the Sox fell into (0-5) going into the third inning as their offense is quite capable of taking care of a 5 run deficit with 7 innings remaining, or a 4 run deficit with 5 innings left. I’m not a big Tavarez basher. He’s about one of the most versatile pitchers in the league, and a bargain, taboot. But it’s not his day today, either. Nor that of Timlin. They can deal with a 2 run deficit in 3 innings (oops, 3 runs.) That is, as long as the bullpen cooperates. Now I wonder if there’s any 9th inning magick leftover from last week. Not today. (The day wasn’t a total loss, the yankees did not win today.)

I always liked Doug Mirabelli and was sorry to see him go the first time and was perplexed when they let him go the second time. Despite his low batting average, Mirabelli was good for the Sox. He had strong relationships with Wakefield as his personal catcher (is there a better defensive knuckleball catcher?), and also with team captain and first string catcher Jason Varitek. I wondered if this was a subtle hint from upper management to Wake that he’s getting close to the end of his tenure. Kevin Cash has proven to be capable as a knuckleball catcher, and is providing offensive support I always wished Dougie could have produced.

Wake has had quite a solid and satisfying career, but I always hope to see him have that one HUGE all-star season, or a no hitter. And I certainly hope that this is not his last season. Wake has always been a consummate baseball playing professional. One of the most selfless acts I’ve witnessed in baseball was the year he volunteered to pitch in relief in the playoffs late one game, which would have jeopardized his start the next day. Class act, that Mr. Wakefield.

Wake Digs Too Big of a Hole

The Red Sox offense tried valiantly to overcome the massive hole dug by Tim Wakefield early in the game but it was not enough. For some reason Wake's knuckler has not been effective indoors this season. He gave up 7 runs in 2 2/3 innings tonight and earned the loss. The offense did its part with 15 hits and 8 runs including 2 in the 9th but they fell one run short of tying it up.

Sox-Twins On ESPN...5 Things Joe Morgan Will Say

Tonight's Red Sox Twins game will be on ESPN for Sunday Night baseball meaning we get to hear Joe Morgan say the same comments he does every time the Sox play. Here are 5 things you know he will talk about.

1. With Wakefield pitching he will once again over-explain what knuckleball is, as if we have never seen the pitch before

2. He will say how David Ortiz will come out of his slump and he is not as bad a hitter as his average indicates.

3. He will refer to the 1975 World Series.

4. He will say Manny Ramirez is going into the Hall of Fame

5. He will say the Yankees are not out of the running for the division and will bring up A-Rod coming off the DL.

See if you can guess the order in which he says the above or add your own.
Here's some typical Joe Morgan insight from an earlier game.
